Ex-Core Bitcoin Developer Brushes Away Concerns About Google Quantum Computer’s Ability

Peter Todd, a popular cryptographer is trying to ward off worries that recent developments pertaining to quantum computing could put Bitcoin’s (BTC) security at risk.

Through a tweet, the ex-Bitcoin core developer spearheaded the attack, which follows reports that Google had successfully attained “quantum supremacy.”

In a document accessed by the Financial Times, the tech behemoth had asserted that it had built a system that was able to solve an equation, which would normally take 10,000 years, in just 3 minutes and 20 seconds.

The Financial Times report, quoting document highlighting the system’s ability to perform complex calculation, says “To our knowledge, this experiment marks the first computation that can only be performed on a quantum processor.”

Quantum computing has become a disputed area for cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Two years before, crypto specialists dismissed beliefs that such systems could sabotage Bitcoin blockchain’s security. Likewise, Todd argues that financial constraints over Google’s latest system can only protect Bitcoin and its blockchain from issues in the future.

Peter Todd explained why the kind of quantum computing facility being developed by Google cannot crack cryptography. Todd said “It means nothing because Google’s quantum breakthrough is for a primitive type of quantum computing that is nowhere near breaking cryptography.”

Peter Todd raised doubts about the capability of quantum computers:

“We still don’t even know if it’s possible to scale quantum computers; quite possible that adding qbits will have an exponential cost.”

Earlier in September, there were news reports that the US National Security Agency or NSA was trying to research and build quantum-resistant cryptography.
