Avalanche Unveils GCP Metric to Measure Blockchain Economy

The Avalanche Foundation has introduced Gross Chain Product (GCP), a framework designed to measure economic activity across blockchain ecosystems by focusing on real on-chain output rather than token price movements. The methodology adapts concepts from traditional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) calculations to provide a broader assessment of blockchain economies while reducing the influence of cryptocurrency price volatility.

Initially deployed on Avalanche’s C-Chain, GCP applies the income approach commonly used in national accounting systems. The framework combines protocol revenue, operating expenses, and transaction fees into a single indicator intended to reflect economic activity across the network.

The Gross Chain Product framework is designed to measure real blockchain economic output by separating underlying network activity from the impact of volatile token prices.

Alternative to Traditional Blockchain Metrics

The Avalanche Foundation said existing blockchain metrics, including Total Value Locked (TVL) and token market capitalization, do not always provide an accurate picture of economic activity. TVL primarily reflects the amount of capital deposited in decentralized finance applications, while market capitalization is largely influenced by investor sentiment and price speculation rather than actual network productivity.

By comparison, GCP seeks to evaluate economic output generated by blockchain participants, offering a methodology more closely aligned with the principles used to measure national economies. The foundation indicated that such an approach could become increasingly relevant as the digital asset industry continues to expand. As of late July 2026, the global cryptocurrency market was valued at approximately $2.31 trillion, with Avalanche remaining one of the major Layer 1 blockchain networks supporting decentralized finance and blockchain-based applications.

A key feature of the framework is its distinction between nominal and real economic activity. Nominal GCP measures output using prevailing token prices, while real GCP adjusts for price fluctuations to isolate changes in underlying economic activity. The methodology is based on the Fisher chain-weighted index, an approach widely used in national GDP calculations, and has been adapted to account for blockchain ecosystems where multiple digital assets with varying prices circulate simultaneously.

Data Reveals Economic Trends on Avalanche

Avalanche applied the GCP framework to activity on its C-Chain between January 2025 and March 2026, identifying several distinct phases in the network’s economic performance.

According to the analysis, network activity increased sharply during April 2025 as liquidation events triggered by broader macroeconomic developments temporarily boosted nominal transaction activity. However, the foundation indicated that these conditions overstated the level of sustained economic growth.

The data showed that the following months experienced more stable expansion, supported by broader decentralized finance activity under relatively favorable macroeconomic conditions. Toward the end of 2025 and into early 2026, economic activity weakened as lending protocols and decentralized exchanges recorded lower volumes following declines in collateral values, which reduced both borrowing capacity and trading activity.

The analysis found that nominal economic output declined about 60% from its January 2025 baseline, while inflation-adjusted or real GCP fell only about 25%, suggesting that underlying blockchain activity remained more resilient than token prices indicated.

Potential Applications Beyond Avalanche

The Avalanche Foundation said the framework could also be applied to other blockchain ecosystems to help investors, developers, and policymakers evaluate economic performance using measures based on actual network productivity rather than asset prices alone. It suggested that the metric could support investment analysis, protocol development, and the design of incentive mechanisms aligned with long-term economic activity.

The research also highlighted structural growth in real-world asset (RWA) protocols during the study period. While traditional decentralized finance sectors such as lending and decentralized trading experienced contractions, RWA-related applications continued to expand, indicating that broader blockchain use cases may help reduce reliance on more cyclical segments of decentralized finance.

Avalanche plans to refine the Gross Chain Product framework and expand its use across additional parts of its ecosystem, with the potential for broader adoption by other blockchain networks seeking more comprehensive measures of economic activity.
