Binance Pay has expanded its payment network in Japan through an integration with PayPay-supported merchants, allowing eligible overseas users to spend digital assets at millions of merchant locations while businesses continue receiving settlement in Japanese yen.
The interoperability is being enabled through HIVEX, connecting Binance Pay with the local merchant payment infrastructure. The arrangement is designed primarily for international travelers, providing another way for visitors to use digital assets for everyday purchases without requiring participating merchants to change their existing settlement process.
The integration allows eligible Binance Pay users to pay with digital assets at PayPay-supported merchants in Japan while merchants continue to receive their funds in JPY, preserving a familiar fiat-based settlement process.
Access for Overseas Binance Pay Users
According to the announcement, about 48 million eligible Binance Pay users across more than 100 countries and regions can access millions of merchant locations in Japan through the new connection.
The service is aimed at inbound travelers and covers common travel-related spending, including dining, shopping, accommodation, and other purchases. By linking Binance Pay to an established domestic QR payment ecosystem, the arrangement seeks to make digital asset payments more practical for visitors who may otherwise rely on traditional payment methods.
The model separates the payment experience of consumers from the settlement experience of merchants. Users can use supported digital assets through Binance Pay, while merchants continue to receive payment in Japanese yen.
In Japan, PayPay serves as the local merchant network through which the Binance Pay connection operates. This structure means businesses do not need to adopt a separate cryptocurrency settlement model to serve eligible international customers.
For merchants, the arrangement is intended to provide access to overseas digital asset users without requiring changes to the way their proceeds are settled. That could be particularly relevant for businesses operating in tourism-heavy areas and other locations with significant numbers of international visitors.
Binance Targets Cashless Travel Payments
Binance has described the Japan rollout as an extension of its payment presence in a market where cashless transactions are widely used. The company is positioning the integration as part of a broader effort to connect digital asset payments with everyday transactions and cross-border spending.
The announcement indicates that partnerships with established domestic payment networks are central to this approach. Rather than requiring merchants to build infrastructure specifically for cryptocurrency payments, Binance Pay can connect users to payment systems that businesses already use.
Thomas Gregory, Binance’s vice president of payments and fiat, described Japan as an important international travel destination and said developments in connected cashless payments were influencing how payment services evolve. He also characterized the PayPay integration as an example of traditional fiat payment infrastructure increasingly interacting with digital assets.
Expansion of Asia’s QR Payment Network
The Japan launch builds on Binance Pay’s broader QR payment strategy across major travel corridors in Asia. The announcement did not identify the other markets included in that network, but Binance said the various integrations are intended to expand access to digital asset payments in important regional travel destinations.

The QR-based model enables Binance Pay to connect digital asset users with established local merchant networks while allowing businesses to retain a conventional fiat settlement experience.
Japan adds another major travel market to that framework, with PayPay’s merchant network acting as the acceptance point for eligible overseas Binance Pay users.
The arrangement could also provide a practical bridge between digital assets and established payment infrastructure. For travelers, the benefit is access to a broader set of merchants through a payment method connected to their existing Binance Pay accounts. For merchants, the process is designed to remain largely familiar because settlement continues in local currency.
The expansion comes as payment providers increasingly explore ways to make digital assets usable in real-world transactions. Connecting cryptocurrency wallets with established QR payment networks can reduce the need for merchants to directly handle digital assets while preserving the ability of users to spend them.
For Binance Pay, the Japan integration represents another step toward using existing payment infrastructure to facilitate cross-border digital asset spending. For PayPay-supported merchants, it creates an additional channel for serving eligible international customers while maintaining settlement in Japanese yen.
