Bunge and CP Group Launch Blockchain Platform for Soy Traceability

Bunge and BKP sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

A significant step towards transparent and sustainable agricultural supply chains was marked recently as Bunge Limited, a leading global agribusiness, and Bangkok Produce Merchandising Public Company Limited (BKP), a subsidiary of Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), formalized a new partnership agreement. This initiative follows successful blockchain-based pilot tests for soy and soy meal traceability, aiming to scale digital tracking across thousands of metric tons of agricultural commodities supplied from Brazil to Thailand and other Southeast Asian markets.

Pioneering Blockchain for Supply Chain Accountability

The strategic partnership centers on integrating blockchain technology for tracking soybeans and soy meal originated by Bunge in Brazil, destined for BKP and Charoen Pokphand Foods’ food and feed productions. This digital solution, tested since 2023, offers immutable and transparent data flows regarding the journey of grains from farm origination through processing and logistics, ultimately reaching production plants in the region. The companies expect blockchain-backed operations to ensure that every supply chain participant benefits from greater visibility and accountability, with the digital ledger recording all pertinent information securely and permanently.

Commitment to Sustainability and Socio-Environmental Standards

Both suppliers have highlighted their commitment to advancing sustainable, deforestation-free supply chains within the region. The sourcing of agricultural products under this partnership will strictly adhere to met socio-environmental verification protocols, with supplier practices monitored and validated against standards such as the Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS). The platform grants stakeholders access to comprehensive data, including certification status and farm-level documentation, aligning closely with CP Group’s stated ambition of achieving a net-zero emissions supply chain by 2050 and Bunge’s established expertise in regenerative agriculture and environmental stewardship across South America.

Scaling Technology and Commercial Integration

Over the past year, Bunge and CP Group jointly conducted technical, operational, and commercial assessments to evaluate digitally integrated supply chains. The successful pilot, involving approximately 375,000 metric tons of soy meal, enabled the validation of blockchain technology in enhancing transparency and operational efficiency. The current agreement paves the way for a large-scale rollout of this solution, encompassing not only transparency but also improvements in logistics, procurement, and overall supply chain management throughout both companies’ operations.

Executives from both organizations have indicated that the partnership is poised to unlock new avenues for business growth, driven by access to advanced technologies, improved logistics, and sustainable sourcing models. These improvements are expected to enhance efficiency, reduce overall costs, and broaden market opportunities for each party. The expanded collaboration will span the entire supply chain, from upstream procurement and business process optimization to downstream manufacturing at CP’s animal feed plants.

Technology Leadership and Future Plans

The blockchain platform underpinning this partnership was developed by Bunge in conjunction with Justoken, a portfolio company of Bunge Ventures specializing in blockchain infrastructure. Bunge has previously established a track record as the first global exporter to achieve complete traceability and monitoring for all direct and indirect soy purchases from critical areas in the Brazilian Cerrado. The agribusiness leverages advanced satellite technologies to monitor farmland, covering about 46,000 farms and 36 million hectares across South America to mitigate deforestation risks.

Bunge’s sustainability leaders have stated that the partnership, and the broader adoption of blockchain, demonstrates the power of collaboration in developing robust new standards that meet evolving global sustainability expectations. The platform is expected to deliver extensive data integration for all involved, supporting responsible supply chains and facilitating data-driven decisions for long-term market value.

Similarly, CP Group has conveyed confidence that collaboration with global leaders such as Bunge will strengthen their supply chain competitiveness, enabling expansion into new markets and delivering consistent value to end customers. The partnership reflects both companies’ shared focus on innovation, efficiency, and environmental accountability, supporting commercial commitments that advance regenerative agriculture and help shape a more sustainable future for the global food industry.
