Cardano Native Tokens Set for Fireblocks Institutional Support

Cardano

The Cardano Foundation and Fireblocks are preparing to bring Cardano Native Tokens, or CNTs, onto Fireblocks’ institutional digital-asset custody platform, in a move aimed at making tokens issued directly on the Cardano blockchain easier for financial institutions to manage.

The Cardano Foundation announced the planned integration on September 24, saying CNTs will eventually receive standard-asset treatment on Fireblocks. The change would allow institutions using the platform to custody, transfer, send and receive supported Cardano-based tokens under the same security and policy controls used for other digital assets.

The integration is designed to remove the additional manual processes currently required for Cardano Native Tokens and place them within infrastructure already used by banks, exchanges, payment companies and fintech firms.

Fireblocks has supported Cardano’s ADA since 2021. Until now, however, tokens created natively on the Cardano blockchain have required additional procedures to be handled through the institutional platform.

Two Cardano Token Standards Included

Cardano Native Tokens are issued directly on the blockchain alongside ADA rather than being created through separate smart-contract-based token systems. The planned Fireblocks support will cover two Cardano standards: CIP-26, which relates to the Cardano Token Registry, and CIP-68, which provides an onchain metadata framework.

Once implemented, assets complying with either standard are expected to be treated as standard assets within Fireblocks rather than requiring individual handling as specialized additions.

The Cardano Foundation has described the development as an infrastructure step intended to improve institutional access to assets created on the network. The underlying objective is to connect Cardano-based token issuers with financial companies already relying on institutional custody and transaction infrastructure.

That could be relevant for issuers developing stablecoins, tokenized real-world assets, and other blockchain-based financial products. Instead of requiring custodians to manually accommodate each new Cardano token, standardized support could allow qualifying assets to use established operational and security processes.

Fireblocks Support Expected by March 2027

The announcement does not represent an immediate deployment. The Cardano Foundation said support is expected to become available by March 2027, making the announcement a technical roadmap rather than a completed integration.

The organizations also intend to explore additional decentralized finance and broader ecosystem integrations during 2027. The announcement does not indicate that the partnership has resulted in new token issuance or institutional purchases of ADA.

Fireblocks has said it secures more than $16 trillion in digital-asset transactions and provides infrastructure used by financial institutions. Its institutional network is therefore intended to provide custody, transaction management, and policy controls for organizations operating digital assets.

Stephen Richardson, Fireblocks’ chief strategy officer and head of banking, emphasized that financial institutions consider both the underlying blockchain network and the infrastructure available for managing assets when evaluating new digital assets. He also pointed to Cardano’s research, formal verification, and governance approach as factors relevant to institutional scrutiny.

For Cardano-based issuers, standard Fireblocks support could lower an important operational barrier by allowing eligible tokens to access established institutional custody and transaction rails without separate manual onboarding for each asset.

Cardano Expands Institutional Strategy

The Fireblocks initiative forms part of a broader institutional push by the Cardano Foundation. The nonprofit has pursued projects involving blockchain research, financial-market infrastructure, and international ecosystem development.

Earlier efforts included the establishment of a blockchain laboratory at the University of Brasília and support for a blockchain risk framework focused on capital markets and traditional finance.

The Fireblocks integration could be particularly relevant as tokenized real-world assets and stablecoins develop on Cardano. Institutional issuers often require custody, transaction controls, and compliance infrastructure before launching blockchain-based financial products at scale.

If the planned rollout is completed in 2027, Cardano Native Tokens built under the supported standards could gain access to institutional infrastructure already designed for large-scale digital-asset operations, potentially broadening the network’s reach among financial service providers.

The next milestones will therefore include technical implementation, support for the two token standards, and any additional DeFi or ecosystem integrations announced for 2027. The practical impact will depend on institutional adoption and the number of Cardano-based assets that ultimately use the new infrastructure.
