The initiative will permit consumers to gather all requisite information, through a QI code, about the salmon processed by the company.
Data provided by the blockchain platform include origin, hatching date, fresh water source from which it came, size at the time of transfer to seawater, name of the sea where it was farmed, and also physical condition, list of vaccinations, any specific food provided and date of harvesting.
Now days, consumers are laying a lot of emphasis on the origin of food consumed. Additionally, there are concerns about the quality of food and whether it is produced in a sustainable manner. The program is initially unveiled on the France market.
Brede Løfsgaard, sales director at Cermaq-Norway, explained how the latest project ensures total control over the supply chain:
“This is a new and exciting project, which puts a larger emphasis on transparency and traceability in all parts of our value chain. This is something we as a company are very focused on, but also something we see that consumers want and expect.”
Labeyrie has now unveiled a unique blockchain powered traceability solution for two of its smoked salmon products of Norwegian origin, enabling shoppers to know all crucial data in the entire production chain of the salmon being purchased.
By scanning the QR code provided on the pack of the product, using a smart phone or tablet, consumers can activate the tailor-made app displaying data about the salmon, from egg to store.
Løfsgaard elaborated on the benefits of the blockchain platform:
“This project contributes to reassuring French consumers that the salmon they are purchasing has been farmed in a responsible and sustainable way, is healthy and nutritious, and comes from the beautiful, cold and crisp waters north of the Arctic Circle.”
