Filipino Seafarers to Carry Blockchain Powered Digital Certificates

Seafarers from the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) will not have a need to to carry their credentials with themselves, as MAAP has established an e-wallet utilizing blockchain technology to store all of its cadets’ information from admission through graduation.

This academic year 2022-2023 marks the beginning of the deployment of the digital wallet, which aims to reduce the requirement for seafarers to keep their various documentation aboard or while transacting with the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) or their staffing firm.

Regarding safety, staffing agencies of cadets and mariners may have direct links to their e-wallet, but they may only view the data and cannot alter them.

“Hacking is incredibly tough. Therefore, all of our cadets’ certificates will now feature QR codes. The captured image is then uploaded to the cadet’s electronic wallet. Vice Admiral Eduardo Ma. R. Santos, president of the MAAP and simultaneous vice president of the Associated Marine Officers and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines, said that the cadet will simply need to provide his e-wallet in order to present his diplomas (Amosup).
