IBM Patents Blockchain Implementation to Administer Data For Self Driving Vehicles

Software giant IBM is adding another feather to its cap with the receipt of a blockchain patent for a system that administers data and communications for autonomous or self-driving vehicles (SDVs). On April 2, the patent document was released by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

In the past, IBM has filed numerous patents for several inventions related to SDVs. So, a blockchain system could perhaps improve SDV features such as privacy and data validation.

The condition for future blockchain deployment would be a mechanism in which an SDV communicates and forecasts the actions of non -autonomous drivers in the immediate vicinity.

The patent first summarizes several parameters that can be utilized to evaluate the actions of adjacent drivers using a broad range of sensor technologies and to improve the risks analysis based on the maneuver of surrounding vehicles/drivers.

The patent explains how vehicle and driver data can be collected and sent to a cloud server

“Observing, detecting, and sensing of the driver behavior data can be collected by the in-vehicle sensors of the driver’s vehicle in real-time and uploaded onto a cloud data hub, designated […] as a Mobility Information Hub (MIH), to which the SDV can subscribe to.”

IBM suggests that blockchain can improve this complicated structure and the application of environmental analysis and forecast prototypes in real time by facilitating complete data functionality while preserving the confidentiality of others. IBM states that sensor information may be loaded into a blockchain system whereby a public key infrastructure (PKI) is employed to generate “the right public-private pair associated with each SDV / driver, wherein each transaction uploading or accessing data is cryptographically signed via a personal key.”

The patent states that only approved institutions would have access to the information. The patent summarizes how the projected actions of adjacent drivers can then be accessed in real time by means of a blockchain customer program— for instance by scanning a neighboring licence plate. In particular, General Motors, the American automobiles manufacturer, also documented its own blockchain patent for a method for managing autonomous vehicle data.

An evaluation of the patents relating to blockchain lodged in August 2018 found that IBM is literally neck – and – neck to Chinese Alibaba for the maximum number of such patent applications filed by any worldwide entity. In 2019, the tech giant also pursued several fresh blockchain patents.
