Luno Recovers 25% of Failed Deposits With MoneyHash

luno

Luno, a cryptocurrency and investment platform, has integrated MoneyHash’s payment orchestration technology to streamline payment processing across its markets, reduce engineering workloads, and improve deposit success rates. The integration enables Luno to manage multiple payment providers through a centralized system, introduce local payment methods with less development work, and route transactions based on provider performance.

The companies report that MoneyHash’s transaction-routing capabilities have helped Luno recover one in four deposits that might otherwise have failed, highlighting the potential benefits of payment orchestration for platforms operating across multiple markets.

Managing More Than 25 Payment Connections

As Luno expanded its international presence, the company needed to accommodate the payment preferences and banking infrastructure available in individual markets. This required integrations with more than 25 payment providers and local banking connections, each operating with different technical requirements, processes, and reporting systems.

Maintaining these connections created an increasing operational burden. Every new market or payment option required additional engineering work to establish, maintain and monitor the relevant integrations. Over time, these responsibilities consumed resources that could otherwise have supported product development and improvements to the customer experience.

Cornel Smit, Luno’s head of payments, explained that outsourcing payment integration management to MoneyHash allowed internal teams to reduce the time spent maintaining payment connections. The change enabled engineering resources to focus more closely on revenue-generating initiatives and developing products for customers.

The integration therefore addresses a broader challenge for digital financial platforms: expanding payment access without allowing the complexity of supporting different providers to grow at the same pace as the business.

How MoneyHash Improves Payment Routing

MoneyHash provides a unified environment for managing payment providers, transaction routing and payment operations. Instead of developing and maintaining individual connections for every provider, businesses can manage their payment infrastructure through a single orchestration layer.

For Luno, the system evaluates available payment routes according to provider performance and can retry transactions through alternative connections when appropriate. This approach gives the platform additional opportunities to complete deposits that might otherwise remain unsuccessful.

By consolidating payment-provider management and dynamically routing transactions, the integration gives Luno a way to improve deposit completion while reducing the engineering effort required to support different payment methods.

The system also provides a consolidated view of payment performance across Luno’s provider network. Greater visibility can help payment teams assess transaction outcomes, identify underperforming connections and make more informed decisions about routing and provider management.

Nader Abdelrazik, co-founder and chief executive of MoneyHash, described the company’s objective as reducing the operational complexity associated with managing multiple payment providers. The approach is intended to help businesses improve payment performance, accelerate implementation and allow internal teams to concentrate on customer-focused development.

Faster Expansion Across Local Markets

Beyond deposit recovery, the companies identified reduced engineering maintenance and shorter launch times for local payment methods as additional benefits. However, the announcement did not disclose specific figures measuring improvements in either area.

Luno serves millions of customers across multiple markets, making access to locally relevant payment options an important part of its operations. Different countries have distinct banking arrangements and payment preferences, requiring platforms to adapt their funding infrastructure to local conditions.

With MoneyHash managing the connections through a common system, Luno can potentially introduce additional payment options without undertaking an entirely separate integration project for each provider. This creates a more flexible operating model as the platform expands or adjusts its services across jurisdictions.

Payment Orchestration Gains Importance in Africa

The deployment also highlights the importance of payment orchestration in markets where financial infrastructure and customer payment preferences vary considerably. Across Africa, businesses operating internationally may need to connect with multiple local providers to offer accessible and reliable payment services.

For cryptocurrency platforms, successful deposits are particularly important because customers must fund their accounts before they can participate in trading or use other financial services.

Luno’s reported recovery of 25% of potentially lost deposits demonstrates how transaction routing and centralized payment management can help reduce payment failures while supporting expansion across diverse markets.

The longer-term results will depend on transaction volumes, provider performance, and the effectiveness of alternative routing. Nevertheless, the integration illustrates how payment infrastructure can become a strategic component of customer acquisition, retention and international growth for digital financial platforms.
