Samsung Integrates Data Stream and eLogbook with VeChainThor Blockchain

DNV has certified a Statement of Fact (SoF) for Samsung Heavy Industries’ (SHI) usage of blockchain technology inside its SAS (Samsung Autonomous Ship) and SVESSEL eLogbook data platform following testing on an operational vessel. The initiative linked up SHI’s data flow and eLogbook with the VeChainThor blockchain to illustrate the capabilities of the technology for safe data stream uses aboard ships.

The information at issue related to navigational information for Samsung’s Autonomous Ship system, including the Collision Risk Index and Distance to the Closest Point of Approach. In accordance with IMO MEPC.312(74) electronic logbook requirements, the SVESSEL eLogbook was also published over the blockchain.

“We are thrilled that SHI is the initial shipyard to be approved by DNV to utilise blockchain technology to its growing SAS automated navigation gear and SVESSEL eLogbook digital asset tracking system. Dr. Hyun Joe Kim, vice president of SHI’s Ship and Offshore Performance Research Centre, expressed his gratitude to DNV for their efforts in this joint study.

“This is just the start, but we are anxious to show and validate the effect of blockchain technology on actual ships’ cybersecurity.”
