Sony-Backed Soneium Plans $SONEIUM Token for Entertainment IP

Soneium

Soneium, the Sony-backed Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain, plans to introduce $SONEIUM, a native token designed to connect entertainment creators, intellectual property (IP) owners, developers, fans, and investors within an on-chain economy. Announced on October 26, 2026, the initiative will focus on tokenized intellectual property, with planned applications covering royalty-backed assets, entertainment investments, and automated revenue distribution.

The proposed $SONEIUM token is intended to serve as the economic foundation of Soneium’s entertainment ecosystem, enabling creators to seek community funding and distribute commercial proceeds through programmable blockchain infrastructure.

Developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs, Sony’s blockchain unit, Soneium aims to make creative assets easier to finance, manage, and monetize. Its model allows intellectual property to be represented on-chain, potentially giving fans and investors opportunities to support creative projects and participate in their economic performance.

An IP token could represent a creator, studio, or individual entertainment title. Depending on its structure, it could function as a collectible for fan engagement or as a transferable token circulating within a specific intellectual property ecosystem.

Soneium Portal targets investment and royalty distribution

The planned Soneium Portal will serve as the primary platform for discovering intellectual property, issuing tokens, and accessing investment opportunities. Smart contracts are expected to automate royalty payments and revenue-sharing arrangements, reducing the need to administer every distribution manually.

The platform is expected to begin with primary sales before expanding into broader fan participation and royalty distribution. Two planned products will extend its investment capabilities.

IP Vault is designed to support royalty-backed assets and provide indirect exposure to opportunities such as music catalog funds. IP Bonds, meanwhile, are intended to be backed by entertainment businesses and generate returns linked to entertainment revenue.

The products could create additional funding channels for businesses and creators while giving investors access to entertainment-related financial opportunities. However, the announcement does not establish specific investment terms, expected returns, or the regulatory arrangements governing the planned products.

Moriusa and K-pop royalties headline initial projects

Soneium’s initial initiatives will focus on Asian entertainment and pop culture through partnerships with Super State Holdings and DayOneDream’s WAVIST platform.

The collaboration with Super State Holdings will begin with Moriusa, a character-based intellectual property project. Fans and supporters are expected to help finance its expansion into merchandise, animated shorts, and licensing opportunities.

The partnership is intended to connect community participation with the commercial development of entertainment properties, potentially allowing supporters to contribute to projects at an earlier stage of their growth.

DayOneDream’s WAVIST platform will focus on tokenizing royalties associated with the concert business. The initiative includes artists such as BTOB and Lee Chae-yeon, with the aim of allowing fans and investors to participate in revenue generated by live entertainment.

By bringing character licensing and concert royalties onto blockchain infrastructure, Soneium aims to create new funding and revenue-sharing models for entertainment businesses while connecting creators with their communities.

The financial structure of these initiatives, including the precise rights attached to tokens and the methods used to calculate distributions, has not been fully detailed.

Existing blockchain infrastructure supports expansion

Soneium’s mainnet launched on January 14, 2025, and transaction fees have been paid in ETH. The network uses Optimism’s OP Stack, an open-source framework for developing Ethereum Layer 2 blockchains.

According to Soneium, its ecosystem supports more than 250 applications across music, gaming, anime, film, collectibles, and fan-created content. Approximately $9.38 million is locked in applications on the network, although the figure may change as users deposit or withdraw assets.

The USDSC stablecoin is also live on the mainnet and supports settlement activity. Sony invested $13 million in Startale Labs in early 2025, and the infrastructure company has worked with Sony to develop Soneium.

Programmable intellectual property remains central to strategy

Soneium’s broader strategy extends beyond fundraising to the management of ownership, licensing, and royalties. Its proposed Onchain IP Architecture is designed to support creative works and AI-assisted content production.

The architecture includes an IP Registry for registering works, an IP Graph for connecting derivatives and collaborations, and an IP Execution Layer for implementing predefined licensing, royalty, and revenue-sharing rules.

These components could help creators establish clearer terms for how their work is used and how commercial proceeds are distributed. Soneium also aims to connect traditional entertainment audiences with blockchain-based services through non-fungible tokens and community funding mechanisms.

The success of the $SONEIUM initiative will depend on the launch of its planned products, the adoption of tokenized intellectual property, and the legal and commercial structures supporting the assets. If implemented successfully, the ecosystem could offer entertainment businesses additional financing options while giving fans new ways to participate in creative projects.
