Sony’s Soneium Selects OP Enterprise for Blockchain Operations

Soneium

Sony’s Soneium blockchain is set to use OP Enterprise, a blockchain infrastructure and operations service developed by Optimism developer OP Labs, as the network expands its enterprise-focused blockchain operations.

The Optimism Foundation and OP Labs said they will provide fully managed operational support for Soneium under a new service arrangement. The agreement covers core infrastructure responsibilities, including deployment, software upgrades, sequencer operations, and node infrastructure management.

The service will also extend to continuous network monitoring and incident response, giving Soneium access to a dedicated operational framework for maintaining blockchain availability and addressing technical problems.

The agreement is designed to give Soneium fully managed blockchain infrastructure and operational support while allowing Sony’s network to retain ownership, governance authority, and control over its long-term development roadmap.

The two organizations have entered into a service-level agreement that establishes a monthly uptime target of 99.9%. Emergency incidents will receive 24-hour, seven-day-a-week response coverage, providing Soneium with a formal operational support structure as its blockchain infrastructure develops.

Soneium Retains Control Over Development

Despite outsourcing significant operational responsibilities, Soneium will continue to control the blockchain and determine its strategic direction. The Soneium team will also remain involved in engineering and technical development rather than transferring complete control of the network to OP Labs or the Optimism Foundation.

This structure separates infrastructure operations from product and protocol ownership. OP Enterprise will handle much of the routine work required to keep the network operating, while Soneium retains authority over technical priorities and future development.

The arrangement could allow Soneium’s engineering teams to concentrate more heavily on applications and blockchain functionality while relying on specialized infrastructure support for network operations.

Soneium has previously operated using the OP Stack, the open-source blockchain development framework associated with Optimism. The latest agreement expands the relationship by adding managed operational services through OP Enterprise.

Focus on On-Chain Entertainment and Intellectual Property

Soneium is being developed around applications involving entertainment and intellectual property, with the network team continuing to explore ways to bring those activities on-chain.

Its plans include tokenized intellectual property and entertainment applications that can use blockchain infrastructure to manage digital assets and related rights. The project is also working on mechanisms for on-chain royalty distribution and intellectual property tools designed for artificial intelligence applications.

The managed infrastructure model could help Soneium focus engineering resources on tokenized intellectual property, onchain royalty systems, and AI-related IP tools while OP Enterprise handles critical network operations.

For enterprises using blockchain infrastructure, operational reliability can be as important as the underlying technology. The 99.9% monthly uptime target and around-the-clock emergency response commitment provide a defined service framework that is intended to reduce operational risks associated with running a public blockchain.

Agreement Does Not Add Cross-Chain Functions

The new arrangement is focused specifically on infrastructure and operations. It does not introduce interoperability or cross-chain functionality between Soneium and other blockchain networks.

That distinction is important because the agreement is primarily an operational expansion rather than a new interoperability initiative. Soneium will continue to use the OP Stack, while OP Enterprise will provide additional support for deployment, upgrades, infrastructure management, monitoring, and incident response.

As per reports, the partnership reflects a broader trend toward managed blockchain infrastructure services, in which companies can retain ownership and strategic control of networks while outsourcing specialized operational functions.

For Sony, the arrangement provides a more structured infrastructure layer for Soneium without changing its ownership model. For OP Labs and the Optimism Foundation, it extends OP Enterprise into the operations of a blockchain associated with a major global entertainment and technology company.

The agreement also illustrates how blockchain networks aimed at enterprise and consumer applications are increasingly separating protocol development from day-to-day infrastructure management. Soneium’s continued engineering involvement means the network remains under Sony’s strategic direction, while OP Enterprise assumes a larger role in keeping the underlying infrastructure operational and resilient.
