Sui has introduced Tessera, a business-to-business payments and settlement network designed to address one of the main obstacles preventing wider blockchain adoption in institutional finance: the public disclosure of transaction amounts.
The prototype is being developed on the Sui blockchain and uses confidential transfers together with Seal multi-party computation technology to keep payment values hidden from the general public. The approach is intended to allow businesses to use blockchain-based settlement infrastructure without exposing commercially sensitive pricing and transaction-volume information to competitors.
Tessera is designed to provide private B2B payments and settlement on Sui while allowing authorized parties, including regulators and compliance officials, to access transaction information when required.
Public blockchains typically make transaction information visible, providing transparency that can support verification and auditing. For financial institutions and businesses, however, the same transparency can create operational concerns. Details about prices, payment sizes and transaction volumes can reveal commercially sensitive information and potentially weaken a company’s competitive position.
Sui has indicated that this issue has contributed to institutional reluctance to conduct real-world business transactions on public blockchain infrastructure. Companies may be unwilling to settle trades on networks where competitors can observe transaction values and infer details about commercial activity.
Tessera seeks to address this limitation by introducing privacy controls while retaining the underlying benefits of distributed ledger technology. The network is designed so counterparties can conduct transactions privately while authorized entities retain the ability to inspect relevant information when necessary.
Seal MPC Enables Confidential Transfers
A central component of Tessera is Seal MPC, which uses multi-party computation, a cryptographic technique that enables multiple parties to jointly perform computations without revealing their individual inputs.
In the context of financial settlement, the technology can allow transaction amounts to be validated and recorded without making those values publicly visible. This creates a structure in which businesses can maintain confidentiality while still benefiting from blockchain-based settlement and recordkeeping.
The selective disclosure model is also intended to address regulatory and compliance requirements. Regulators, auditors and designated compliance personnel could receive access to transaction information when appropriate, while the same information would remain unavailable to competitors and the broader public.
