Turkey’s Turkcell Launches Blockchain-based ID Management Solution

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019, Turkcell (NYSE: TKC) (BIST: TCELL), the fastest growing digital operator in the world, introduced its blockchain service for international roaming. Blockchain is a new technology that enables companies to work together in a safe environment.

This technology can be used for safer and faster transactions in the telecommunications industry -and with roaming clearance, ID management and donation solutions, Turkcell has successfully expanded the use of blockchain services to the industry.

Turkcell currently shares its blockchain network with the telecom operator partner BeST based in Belarus, Lifecell and Lifecell, and talks with study groups and other telecom operators to expand the network further.

Turkcell is at the forefront of innovative solutions with blockchain technology for personal privacy and data security. Existing solutions for ID management require users to create different accounts for different platforms or to use personal data previously shared with third parties. The former requires the user to remember the details of each created account and the latter requires the user to share personal data with third parties who are not involved in the login process.

The blockchain solution by Turkcell provides user control over personal data and ensures personal privacy with an ID management solution compliant with the GDPR. The ID Management solution stores the information required to verify users in the blockchain network and removes additional identity checks -this also allows Turkcell to provide companies with new use cases. The use case for blockchain donations by Turkcell includes an ID management solution to verify the eligibility of people in need for donations.

Turkcell helps with a secure verification solution to rebuild donation trust. The solution offers a complete experience in Turkcell -customers can donate via the BiP communication and life platform and use Paycell as a payment medium. Executive Vice President Serkan Ozturk of Turkcell Customer Experience and Information Technologies said that customer experience must be at the heart of the technology to become a digital operator.

Serkan Ozturk said

“Our customers demand transparency and trust in every step of our processes. In this sense, using blockchain technology is essential to improve customer experience of our digital services and solutions, which remains as top priority in the design of our services. This is why we joined the global blockchain consortium of telecom carriers, The Carrier Blockchain Study Group (CBSG). Our blockchain solutions provide secure digital payments, barter systems, identity verification and IoT applications. These efforts will help us improve our digital services and raise the bar in customer experience.”
