Western Union Taps Noah as Solana Activates Alpenglow Upgrade

Western Union has selected Noah to provide the payment infrastructure for its Receiver Redirect stablecoin service, which uses USDPT, a U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Anchorage Digital Bank on the Solana blockchain. The development coincides with Solana’s activation of Alpenglow, a major consensus upgrade designed to reduce transaction finality from approximately 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds.

The integration aims to connect Western Union’s global money transfer network with blockchain-based settlement, while Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade is designed to make transactions reach finality significantly faster.

Under the agreement, Noah, a payments infrastructure provider operating in the United States and the United Kingdom, will supply the on-chain banking network supporting Receiver Redirect. The service will enable recipients to receive transfers in stablecoin across more than 60 currencies and over 200 countries and territories, potentially reaching Western Union’s customer base of more than 150 million people.

How Western Union’s Stablecoin Service Works

Receiver Redirect uses USDPT, issued on Solana by Anchorage Digital Bank, a U.S. national trust bank. Senders can initiate transfers through Western Union’s network of more than 500,000 agent locations worldwide. Funds are then delivered as USDPT to recipients’ Western Union wallets.

Recipients will be able to retain their stablecoin balances through Stablecard, a product Western Union announced in August 2026. The service is intended to provide greater flexibility in how customers receive, hold, and use transferred money.

Noah will manage the underlying infrastructure, including treasury services, licensing, pre-funding, currency conversion, and stablecoin disbursement. It will also handle local regulatory compliance across the payment channels used for individual transfers.

USDPT has important limitations. According to the issuer’s disclosures, the stablecoin is not issued, backed, or guaranteed by the U.S. government. It is also not insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or another U.S. government agency.

Western Union Global Head of Digital Assets Malcolm Clarke said the service responded to increasing customer demand for more flexible payment options. He explained that routing transfers directly into Stablecard wallets would connect Western Union’s established money movement network with its digital asset ecosystem.

Solana’s Alpenglow Upgrade Targets 150-Millisecond Finality

Solana developer Anza announced that Alpenglow had gone live on the network’s mainnet-beta on October 21, 2026. The upgrade replaces the existing TowerBFT consensus mechanism with a new protocol designed to allow validators to finalize blocks much faster.

Alpenglow targets a reduction in transaction finality from approximately 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds, a substantial improvement intended to support applications requiring near-instant settlement. Actual finality times may vary with network conditions and validator participation.

The upgrade changes how validators agree on transactions and establish finality, while leaving Solana’s transaction execution and fee structure unchanged. Faster finality could benefit payment providers and financial applications that need quicker confirmation before releasing funds or completing transactions.

For Western Union and Noah, faster settlement could complement their efforts to improve international money transfers. However, blockchain finality is only one part of the process; local payment systems, currency conversion, compliance checks, and recipient access can also affect overall delivery times.

Stablecoins Target High Remittance Costs

The partnership addresses a global remittance market estimated by the World Bank at approximately $905 billion annually. International remittance fees average around 6% of the transfer value, creating high costs for individuals sending money across borders.

Western Union and Noah expect stablecoin settlement to reduce delivery times from days to hours and lower costs substantially. Noah’s network already spans more than 100 countries and supports 40 currencies, connecting blockchain settlement with local payment infrastructure without relying exclusively on traditional correspondent banking.

Stablecoin adoption in business payments is also expanding. Annualized B2B stablecoin transaction volume reached $226 billion in 2026, a reported 733% increase year over year, although stablecoins still represent less than 1% of global cross-border B2B flows.

Noah founder and CEO Shah Ramezani said conventional international banking remained slow and expensive, while stablecoins offered a potentially faster and cheaper alternative.

A New Model for Digital Remittances

The agreement illustrates an emerging structure for blockchain-based payments: a regulated bank issues the stablecoin, an infrastructure provider manages settlement and compliance, and an established money transfer company provides global distribution.

For Western Union, the arrangement offers a way to integrate digital assets into its existing services. For Noah, it expands the potential reach of its payment infrastructure. Combined with Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade, the initiative highlights how faster blockchain finality could support more efficient cross-border financial services, although realized savings and delivery times will depend on implementation and local market conditions.
