Argentina Government’s Blockchain Powered Website Hacked to Spread Fake News on Coronavirus Outbreak

Amidst the worldwide crisis created by Coronavirus epidemic, the Argentine government revealed March 14 that the government’s online gazette (Boletin Official), powered by blockchain technology, was abused by hackers to spread misinformation about the spread of coronavirus.

As per officials cited by El Cronista, straightforward hacking attempts to exploit the system were foiled.

Nevertheless, hackers were successful in finding a bug that permitted wrong news to be telecast via edition 34,239 of the bulletin.

The information telecast by hackers includes set of guidelines followed by state employees in case of coronavirus related emergency in Argentina.

The security breach and consequently huge traffic caused the Boletin Official website to go offline for couple of hours.

Info provided by Boletin Official is a lawfully authentic news release. Rules that have been endorsed and inked by the government are broadcast and made authentic using the website.

“The digital edition of the Boletin Oficial acquires legal validity by virtue of Decree No. 207/2016.”

The security breach has fraudulently stated that Argentina government has endorsed an initiative put forth by the Ministry of Education to handle confirmed cases of coronavirus.

The blockchain platform that powers the Official Gazette is a portion of the “Blockchain Federal Argentina” venture, which is based on distributed ledger technology that is utilized by both private enterprises and government agencies.

Through this method, unalterable data is exchanged via a network made up of private enterprises and government organization as members.

The fake news displayed by hackers is still displayed on the Boletin Official website.
