Twitter Adds Ethereum to its Tips Feature

According to a tweet from Twitter on Wednesday, users of Twitter’s iOS and Android Tips payment features may now connect their Ethereum wallet addresses to their accounts. Tips enable Twitter users to include publicly visible payment options to their profiles, allowing them to give tips or donations to any other user on the network.

Until now, Twitter’s Tips section offered both regular payment programs such as Cash App and less conventional Bitcoin wallet addresses. Interestingly, ex-CEO of Twitter Jack Dorsey is labeled a Bitcoin Maximalist by several crypto enthusiasts.

That really is, he has traditionally favored Bitcoin over other altcoins such as Ethereum. “There are no other currencies that I care about,” Decrypt quotes Dorsey as saying during the Miami Bitcoin conference in 2021. He resigned from his position as CEO of Twitter in November 2021.

When questioned, a Twitter spokeswoman refuted that Dorsey’s sudden exit has something to do with Twitter’s decision to finally include Ethereum in its Tips function. Clearly, this is just a coincidence. Nevertheless, notwithstanding Dorsey’s declared admiration for Bitcoin, the social media platform Twitter has been gradually and progressively warming up to Ethereum.

Twitter stated in January (just under two months after Dorsey’s resignation) that users may attach NFTs to their personal profile pictures provided they were on the Ethereum blockchain. Additionally, Twitter handed out NFTs produced on the Ethereum network in June 2021. Thus, Wednesday’s Tips revelation is not entirely unexpected. Nonetheless, the timing is rather amusing.
