Acer Makes Blockchain Bet by Investing in Starbit Innovation

Acer, a Taiwanese laptop manufacturer, has revealed that it would acquire a stake in blockchain technology focused firm Starbit Innovation to enter the non-fungible token (NFT) sector and take a lead in the digitization of the sector.

Decentralized cryptocurrency exchange “STARBIT EX” was launched by Starbit in 2018 as the first of its kind in Asia. Prior to actually establishing Starbit in 2017, CEO Sway Teng was actively engaged in the marketing of Taiwan centered security token offerings (STO).

Starbit debuted its “Jcard” NFT platform in 2021 and it was Asia’s foremost blockchain technology based digital asset disbursement and trading platform. There are digital artworks, souvenirs, game merchandises, and other things on the platform that people can buy.

Starbit and Acer Gadget, a subsidiary of Acer, joined together in early 2022 to offer “Say Yes Again”movie-themed merchandize on Jcard. The NFT items feature movie banners, GIF badges, and snippets from the film, while the tangible goods include wristbands that double as EasyCards for commuters.

Artists have the option to show their work in both real and virtual environments thanks to new technologies like NFT, according to Acer. According to Acer, it will be easier for the firm to enter the blockchain and digital art sectors by leveraging Starbit’s blockchain expertise.

It was recently noted by Acer founder Stan Shih that the metaverse’s initial year of growth will be 2022. Amidst Taiwan’s growing interest in wearable AR/VR devices, Shih believes that content will be the most valuable asset in the future. He thinks that Taiwan is indeed serving a key role in the development of metaverse-related devices, and that talented Taiwanese should be incentivized to become involved in the production of futuristic digital products.
