Sony’s interactive robotic pet, Aibo, is making its entry into the Web3 ecosystem through a blockchain initiative hosted on Soneium, an Ethereum Layer-2 network developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs. This initiative introduces a series of Soulbound Tokens (SBTs) designed to digitally preserve Aibo’s history and legacy.
Initially launched in 1999, Aibo was developed as an AI-powered robotic pet capable of engaging with its owners, learning behaviors, and forming distinctive personality traits over time. Rather than releasing new iterations of the hardware, Sony is now shifting focus toward ensuring Aibo’s presence continues in a decentralized digital format. The introduction of SBTs ensures that each token serves as a personal digital memento rather than a tradeable asset, reinforcing the non-transferable nature of these digital records.
Aibo’s Legacy and the Role of Blockchain
The name “Aibo” originates from the Japanese word “aibou,” meaning “mate” or “companion.” Designed to function as a digital companion, Aibo was programmed to evolve alongside its owner, adapting its behavior based on interactions. Over the years, Aibo has been recognized as a pioneering development in robotic pets, demonstrating how artificial intelligence can replicate social connections and companionship.
Sony’s decision to integrate Aibo into the Soneium blockchain aligns with its vision of maintaining the essence of digital companionship. The “Entertainment Robot Aibo” collection of Soulbound Tokens ensures that these digital collectibles remain permanently linked to an owner’s wallet, preventing resale or transfer. This initiative reflects Aibo’s original design philosophy as a long-term companion rather than a transactional product.
Minting and Ownership of Aibo NFTs
The Aibo NFT collection is currently available for minting on OpenSea, where users are only required to pay a minimal gas fee to complete the transaction. Each digital wallet has the capacity to mint up to 1,000 tokens, and the minting window remains open until March 24.
Since its launch, the initiative has witnessed significant engagement, with over 17.8 million Aibo NFTs minted and more than 56,000 unique owners participating in the program. Despite the large-scale adoption of these digital collectibles, Sony has not disclosed any plans for new Aibo hardware releases. However, the introduction of blockchain-based assets could signify a broader strategy to preserve and enhance digital ownership in the entertainment robotics space.
Whether this initiative serves purely as a commemorative effort or lays the groundwork for future AI-driven blockchain companions remains uncertain. Nonetheless, Sony’s exploration of blockchain technology in preserving digital legacies highlights its commitment to innovation in the evolving digital landscape.
