Ravencoin Faces Four-Day Blockchain Rollback After Attack

Mining Pools Rebuild Chain Following Critical Software Exploit

Ravencoin is facing a potential rollback of roughly four days of blockchain activity after attackers exploited a critical software vulnerability that allowed invalid blocks to be added to the network beginning August 7.

The incident has created uncertainty over the status of recent transactions and prompted cryptocurrency exchanges, including Bitvavo and Upbit, to suspend deposits and withdrawals involving Ravencoin. The disruption comes as major mining pools attempt to restore the blockchain to a point before the first invalid block was introduced.

Two major mining pools that control most of Ravencoin’s computing power are rebuilding the blockchain from before the first invalid block, potentially removing several days of recent transactions from the network’s history.

The vulnerability enabled attackers to introduce blocks that should not have been accepted under the network’s normal validation rules. Once those blocks were incorporated into the blockchain, they became part of the chain’s recorded history, creating a difficult recovery process for network participants.

Invalid Blocks Create Risk for Recent Payments

A rollback would mean transactions recorded after the point selected for the chain reconstruction could disappear from the active blockchain. Payments made during that period could therefore require confirmation again or potentially be invalidated, depending on how the final chain is established.

The situation is particularly significant for exchanges because deposits and withdrawals depend on a reliable and consistent blockchain history. Suspending these services allows trading platforms to limit the risk of processing transactions that could later be removed from the accepted chain.

Bitvavo and Upbit are among the exchanges that have halted Ravencoin deposits and withdrawals while the network deals with the incident. Such precautionary measures are intended to protect users from potential losses resulting from transactions being confirmed on a chain that may ultimately be abandoned.

Mining Pools Take Control of Recovery

Ravencoin has already released a software patch designed to address the vulnerability. However, fixing the underlying flaw does not automatically remove invalid blocks that have already been incorporated into the blockchain.

As a result, the network’s immediate recovery depends on determining which version of the blockchain should be recognized as valid. The two leading mining pools are rebuilding the chain from a point before the attack-generated blocks, effectively placing significant influence over Ravencoin’s recent transaction history in the hands of a relatively small number of network participants.

Ravencoin Network Notice

A critical consensus vulnerability has been demonstrated and exploited on the Ravencoin network.

The issue caused invalid blocks to be accepted by vulnerable nodes. The first known invalid block appeared at height 4,487,776 on 2026-08-07 15:44:01 UTC.…

Although the software vulnerability has been patched, the invalid blocks already recorded cannot simply be erased, leaving the network dependent on a coordinated decision over which chain history should prevail.

Mining pools play a central role in proof-of-work blockchain networks because they combine computing resources from multiple miners. Their control over a large share of Ravencoin’s total computing power gives them substantial influence over which chain becomes dominant during a reorganization.

Users and Exchanges Face Uncertainty

The potential rollback highlights the operational risks that can arise when a blockchain vulnerability affects the network’s consensus and transaction history. Users who conducted transactions during the affected period may have to wait until the network establishes a stable chain before knowing whether their activity will remain permanently recorded.

Exchanges face an additional challenge because they must determine when deposits and withdrawals can safely resume. Until the network reaches consensus on a single version of its history, processing transactions could expose platforms and customers to settlement risks.

The incident also demonstrates that patching a blockchain vulnerability can be only the first step in a recovery process. Network operators must additionally address the consequences of blocks that were accepted before the flaw was fixed.

Ravencoin‘s recovery will ultimately depend on the network settling on a single chain, after which exchanges can assess transaction finality and determine when normal deposit and withdrawal services can resume.

Until that occurs, users and market participants remain exposed to uncertainty surrounding transactions made during the affected period. The episode underscores the importance of robust validation mechanisms, coordinated incident response, and broad network participation in maintaining the integrity of decentralized blockchain systems.
