LayerZero Launches ATLAS for Institutional Exchange Infrastructure

New Platform Targets Banks and Trading Firms

LayerZero has introduced ATLAS, a new infrastructure platform designed to allow trading firms and financial institutions to operate their own branded exchanges without developing core systems for matching orders, clearing, settlement and risk management from the ground up.

The company describes ATLAS as a headless exchange infrastructure, meaning it does not operate its own consumer-facing application or trading venue. Instead, institutions can build and manage their own branded trading platforms on top of the system while retaining control over their users and transaction fees.

The approach is intended to give financial firms an alternative to either undertaking the costly process of building an exchange infrastructure internally or relying on an existing competing platform. LayerZero Chief Executive Bryan Pellegrino has described the objective as creating a neutral and high-performance backend that could support multiple independently operated venues.

ATLAS is designed to provide financial institutions and trading platforms with the core infrastructure needed to launch their own exchanges while retaining control over branding, customers and fees.

Zero Blockchain to Provide Settlement Infrastructure

ATLAS will operate on Zero, a blockchain developed by LayerZero that the company first announced in February 2026 following about two and a half years of development.

Zero is designed to verify trades on-chain using zero-knowledge proofs, allowing transactions to receive fast and cryptographically verifiable settlement. The architecture is intended to provide financial market operators with a settlement system that can offer both speed and finality while reducing the need to build comparable infrastructure independently.

LayerZero has identified several major financial industry participants as collaborators on the underlying infrastructure. They include Citadel Securities, the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation, ARK Invest and Intercontinental Exchange.

ATLAS is expected to launch later this year, leaving prospective institutional users time to evaluate the technology and determine how it could fit into existing trading and settlement systems.

LayerZero Seeks Stronger Institutional Position

The move into exchange infrastructure represents a significant expansion of LayerZero’s focus beyond its established interoperability business. Its messaging protocol has facilitated more than $290 billion in cross-chain transaction volume across 165 blockchains.

Rather than primarily connecting existing blockchain networks and trading venues, ATLAS seeks to provide the underlying infrastructure for institutions creating new venues. The strategy reflects a broader push toward tokenized financial markets, where firms may require specialized infrastructure for trading digital representations of traditional and blockchain-native assets.

The announcement comes after a difficult period for LayerZero’s efforts to strengthen its institutional position. A May exploit involving Kelp, a protocol built using LayerZero’s messaging infrastructure, reportedly affected confidence among some market participants. At least one major partner subsequently moved part of its interoperability requirements to Chainlink, according to reports.

Chainlink has also expanded its institutional operations through partnerships involving tokenization and cloud infrastructure. Its work with the DTCC on a tokenization platform and an alliance with Amazon Web Services have strengthened its presence among traditional financial institutions.

ATLAS therefore gives LayerZero a more direct institutional offering, although the platform remains months away from its planned launch while some competing infrastructure initiatives are already operating in production environments.

ATLAS acts as a universal backend for global markets, collapsing matching, clearing, settlement, and risk into a single tech stack. It has no frontend or consumer application. Instead, trading venues build on top of ATLAS and own the end-to-end product experience and… pic.twitter.com/qcs1MZb4UO

Competition in Institutional Blockchain Infrastructure

LayerZero’s shift toward exchange infrastructure reflects a broader question for blockchain adoption in financial markets: whether institutions will choose newer blockchain-based systems or continue adapting established infrastructure.

By moving from cross-chain messaging toward exchange infrastructure, LayerZero is positioning ATLAS as a broader technology layer for the development of institutional digital-asset markets.

The success of the platform will depend on whether banks, trading firms and other financial operators are prepared to build new venues on infrastructure that is still being developed. Institutions will also have to assess factors including security, reliability, regulatory requirements, scalability and integration with existing financial systems.

ATLAS is the embodiment of our belief that the world’s rapidly expanding asset base needs a neutral, performant engine that underpins the venues that will build across markets spanning the globe. Any market, anywhere in the world, 24/7, with industry-leading performance, all…

ATLAS is ultimately a bet that tokenized markets will need neutral infrastructure beneath independently operated exchanges. Its performance after launch, along with the willingness of major financial institutions to adopt it, will determine whether LayerZero can establish ATLAS as a widely used backend for digital-asset trading venues or whether the market develops around several competing infrastructure providers.

LayerZero‘s existing scale in cross-chain communication gives the company a substantial base from which to pursue the strategy, but ATLAS represents a materially different challenge that will require adoption from institutions operating in a highly regulated and competitive financial environment.
