TRON Upgrade Boosts Ethereum Compatibility and Passkey Support

GreatVoyage-v4.8.2 brings key EVM improvements to TRON

TRON DAO has activated Committee Proposal No. 107 through the GreatVoyage-v4.8.2 upgrade, introducing a series of changes aimed at improving compatibility between the TRON Virtual Machine (TVM) and Ethereum’s latest execution-layer developments.

The upgrade aligns TRON with Ethereum’s Prague and Osaka changes by adding support for the CLZ instruction and enabling historical block hash lookups directly on-chain. The changes are designed to improve execution efficiency while making it easier for developers to deploy and maintain applications that rely on Ethereum-compatible infrastructure.

GreatVoyage-v4.8.2 strengthens TRON’s Ethereum Virtual Machine compatibility by introducing CLZ support and on-chain historical block hash queries, allowing developers to work with newer Ethereum execution features on the TRON network.

The CLZ, or Count Leading Zeros, instruction is intended to improve certain computational operations by allowing smart contracts to determine the number of leading zero bits in a value more efficiently. Its inclusion brings the TVM closer to the execution environment used by Ethereum and could help developers optimize applications that depend on these operations.

The upgrade also adds support for historical block hash queries, giving smart contracts greater access to blockchain history within the execution environment. This capability is part of the broader effort to keep TRON’s virtual machine aligned with Ethereum’s evolving execution standards.

Native Passkey verification expands onboarding options

Another significant component of the upgrade is the integration of the secp256r1 precompile. The cryptographic function is widely associated with modern authentication systems and provides the technical foundation for Passkey-based verification.

The addition of the secp256r1 precompile enables native Passkey verification on TRON, potentially allowing retail users to authenticate blockchain applications through biometric or device-based credentials rather than relying exclusively on conventional private-key interactions.

Passkeys can use authentication mechanisms built into smartphones, computers, and other supported devices, including biometric verification. By incorporating native support at the network level, TRON is positioning its infrastructure to support more familiar onboarding and authentication experiences for users entering Web3 applications.

The change could also benefit developers building consumer-oriented applications on TRON because Passkey verification can reduce some of the complexity associated with traditional wallet authentication. The upgrade therefore addresses both technical compatibility and usability as blockchain applications seek broader mainstream adoption.

MODEXP optimization targets execution efficiency

GreatVoyage-v4.8.2 also introduces optimized energy consumption for the MODEXP operation. MODEXP is used for modular exponentiation, an operation relevant to several cryptographic and smart contract workloads.

TRON’s GreatVoyage-v4.8.2 upgrade is now live, bringing the network into closer alignment with Ethereum’s latest execution standards.

By reducing the energy requirements associated with the operation, the upgrade is expected to improve resource efficiency for applications that depend heavily on modular exponentiation. The adjustment complements the broader objective of making TRON’s execution environment more compatible with Ethereum while improving network-level performance.

The latest release follows previous GreatVoyage upgrades that have progressively expanded compatibility between TRON and Ethereum-based development standards. Maintaining this alignment can help reduce friction for developers working across multiple EVM-compatible ecosystems.

Stablecoin card top-up volume has reached $13.8B cumulatively, with TRON accounting for 21% of August volume.

Another signal of stablecoins becoming part of everyday spending at scale.

TRON records strong stablecoin card activity

Separately, TRON has reported a significant share of stablecoin card top-up activity during August. According to data from CryptoRank shared by TRON DAO, the network accounted for 21% of stablecoin card top-up volume during the month.

The cumulative stablecoin card top-up volume reached $13.8 billion, with TRON, Base and Ethereum collectively responsible for nearly half of the monthly activity, according to the report.

The figures point to growing use of stablecoins in card-based payment systems and indicate that blockchain networks are increasingly supporting transactions that extend beyond traditional crypto trading. For TRON, the activity adds another dimension to its focus on stablecoin infrastructure and everyday payment use.

The combination of the GreatVoyage-v4.8.2 upgrade and rising stablecoin payment activity highlights TRON’s efforts to improve both its underlying developer infrastructure and its role in consumer-facing digital payments.
