US Bank Tests Stablecoin for Real-Time Cross-Border Payments on Stellar

USBDC pilot puts bank-issued digital dollars on public blockchain

US Bank has completed a live pilot of its proprietary USBDC stablecoin, testing real-time cross-border payments between its North American and European operations on the Stellar blockchain. The initiative represents a significant development in the use of bank-issued, dollar-backed digital currencies on public blockchain infrastructure.

The pilot, conducted on September 9, tested the stablecoin across its operational lifecycle, including issuance, payment execution, redemption, freezing and clawback capabilities. The bank also evaluated how the system could work alongside existing controls covering compliance, risk management, finance and operational processes.

The pilot demonstrates how a regulated U.S. bank can use a public blockchain for real-time international payments while retaining bank-grade compliance and risk controls.

The use of Stellar is notable because the blockchain has focused heavily on payments and cross-border transfers. US Bank had already worked with the Stellar Development Foundation and PwC on stablecoin testing in November 2025, meaning the latest exercise builds on an established technical relationship rather than representing an entirely new blockchain initiative.

Focus shifts toward broader treasury applications

US Bank executives have positioned the pilot as part of a wider effort to modernize global cash management and address practical challenges faced by corporate clients. The bank’s digital assets and money movement leadership has emphasized the importance of combining blockchain-based payment capabilities with controls suitable for regulated financial institutions.

The groundwork for the initiative began in October 2025, when US Bank established a dedicated Digital Assets and Money Movement organization. The group was created to strengthen the bank’s capabilities in areas including stablecoin issuance, digital asset custody and the tokenization of money.

Later in 2025, US Bank was also involved in the custody of reserves for stablecoins issued by Anchorage Digital Bank. Its subsequent collaboration with the Stellar Development Foundation and PwC helped establish the technical groundwork for the latest live pilot.

US Bank, the banking subsidiary of U.S. Bancorp, is the fifth-largest banking institution in the United States. Its continued investment in digital assets indicates that blockchain technology is being considered not only for cryptocurrency-related activity but also for conventional banking functions such as payments, liquidity, and treasury management.

Public blockchain strategy could reshape institutional payments

The bank’s plans extend beyond individual cross-border transactions. US Bank has identified potential applications for USBDC in round-the-clock payments, liquidity management, international treasury operations and improved collateral mobility.

By selecting a public blockchain rather than relying exclusively on a private or permissioned ledger, US Bank is testing whether regulated banking operations can benefit from open blockchain infrastructure without sacrificing oversight.

That approach distinguishes the initiative from other institutional blockchain projects that have relied primarily on closed networks. It suggests that public blockchains could become part of the infrastructure supporting regulated financial services if they can satisfy requirements involving compliance, transaction controls, risk management, and operational resilience.

The successful pilot does not by itself indicate that USBDC is ready for broad commercial deployment. However, testing the complete stablecoin lifecycle in a live operational environment provides the bank with a foundation for evaluating wider use cases.

US Bank’s roadmap points toward stablecoins becoming a tool for continuous global money movement, corporate liquidity management and treasury operations rather than being limited to digital-asset transactions.

The development also highlights the broader convergence between traditional banking and blockchain infrastructure, as financial institutions explore ways to make international payments faster and more flexible while maintaining the regulatory safeguards expected of the banking sector.
