Bottomline Launches Chainlink-Powered Global Pay Connect

New platform links banks to blockchain payment networks

Bottomline has launched Global Pay Connect, a new platform designed to connect financial institutions with on-chain payment networks while allowing them to continue using established payment infrastructure and messaging standards.

The service combines Bottomline’s existing payment connectivity with technology from Chainlink, including the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol and Chainlink Runtime Environment. The initiative is aimed at helping banks access blockchain-based settlement and tokenized assets without having to construct separate technical connections for each blockchain network.

Global Pay Connect uses Chainlink’s interoperability infrastructure to connect traditional payment systems with on-chain networks, giving financial institutions a pathway to blockchain settlement while preserving their existing payment operations and messaging standards.

Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, known as CCIP, enables the movement of data and value across supported blockchain networks. The Chainlink Runtime Environment, or CRE, is designed to coordinate workflows involving both blockchain-based systems and conventional financial infrastructure.

By combining the two technologies with Bottomline’s payment connectivity, the platform seeks to simplify the technical requirements associated with blockchain adoption. Instead of replacing existing banking systems, the service is structured to allow on-chain functionality to operate alongside established payment processes.

ISO 20022 support targets existing bank infrastructure

A key element of the platform is its ability to work with familiar financial messaging standards. Banks can continue using standards such as ISO 20022 while connecting those payment workflows to blockchain-based settlement infrastructure.

This approach could be relevant to financial institutions exploring tokenized deposits, digital assets, and other forms of on-chain settlement. Building individual integrations for multiple blockchain networks can require significant technical resources, particularly for banks whose payment systems were developed around conventional financial networks.

Global Pay Connect instead focuses on connectivity between systems. The model could allow financial institutions to add blockchain capabilities without undertaking a complete redesign of their core payment infrastructure.

Bottomline already has a substantial presence in financial payment connectivity. The company describes itself as one of the leading Swift service providers and says its platforms process more than $16 trillion in payments annually. Its Swift connectivity business serves more than 600 banking customers, providing a potentially significant distribution channel for the new blockchain connectivity service.

More than 600 banks gain potential access

The reference to more than 600 banking customers does not mean that all of those institutions are already conducting on-chain transactions through Global Pay Connect. Rather, the existing customer base represents institutions that could potentially access the new infrastructure as individual banks evaluate and implement blockchain-based payment capabilities.

The integration gives Chainlink access to Bottomline’s established banking network, while Bottomline can extend blockchain connectivity to financial institutions without requiring them to abandon existing payment rails.

Actual adoption, transaction volumes and the number of institutions using the service will depend on individual implementations, regulatory requirements and each bank’s approach to digital assets and blockchain settlement.

Chainlink expands institutional infrastructure strategy

The launch adds to Chainlink’s broader effort to establish interoperability infrastructure connecting blockchains with traditional financial institutions, payment providers and capital markets.

For Chainlink, integrating its technology with an established payment connectivity provider provides exposure to financial institutions that already operate within conventional banking infrastructure. For Bottomline, the partnership adds blockchain interoperability to an existing payment technology stack.

The arrangement also reflects a broader shift in the financial industry toward connecting tokenized assets and on-chain settlement with established banking systems. Rather than requiring institutions to operate entirely separate blockchain infrastructures, interoperability platforms can provide a bridge between conventional financial workflows and distributed networks.

LINK remains in focus after September rally

Chainlink’s native LINK token has also attracted market attention following a September rally. The token reached $13.64 on Sept. 7 before giving back some of those gains. Trading data from Sept. 18 placed LINK at around $11.25.

The token’s market performance is separate from the Global Pay Connect launch and does not establish the platform’s adoption or commercial success.

The Bottomline launch strengthens Chainlink’s connection to traditional payment infrastructure and positions interoperability as a key component for financial institutions seeking to integrate blockchain settlement with established banking operations.

The platform’s longer-term impact will depend on how banks deploy the technology, which blockchain networks they support and whether on-chain payment activity develops at sufficient scale to justify broader institutional adoption.
