OCBC, Ant International Launch Tokenized Deposit Service

OCBC Bank

OCBC has partnered with Ant International to launch a tokenized deposit solution designed to help companies manage treasury operations and move liquidity between Singapore and Malaysia more efficiently.

The service allows corporate users to transfer Singapore dollar and US dollar liquidity across borders beyond conventional banking hours, potentially giving treasury teams greater flexibility when managing cash positions between entities in different markets.

The initiative reflects a broader shift by financial institutions toward using blockchain-based infrastructure for commercial banking services. Tokenized deposits represent digital versions of deposits held with commercial banks and recorded on distributed ledger infrastructure.

Blockchain Targets Corporate Liquidity Management

The new service is designed to address some of the operational limitations associated with traditional cross-border fund transfers. Conventional systems can depend on banking schedules, batch processing, and settlement cut-off times, potentially leaving companies with periods when liquidity cannot be moved between accounts.

Using blockchain-based tokenized deposits, the new system creates a permanent digital record of transactions. This can provide corporate treasury teams with a clearer audit trail while reducing the need for manual reconciliation between transaction records.

The OCBC and Ant International solution is designed to give businesses more continuous access to Singapore and US dollar liquidity across borders, reducing dependence on traditional banking-hour and batch-processing constraints.

The service is powered by Ant International’s WhaleRTP platform, which is designed to connect blockchain-based assets associated with different financial institutions.

The infrastructure enables companies to mobilize intra-group liquidity on a continuous basis rather than relying exclusively on traditional settlement windows. This could help businesses respond more quickly to changes in cash requirements between corporate entities operating in Singapore and Malaysia.

For treasury departments, faster movement of funds can improve working capital management and reduce the amount of idle liquidity that may otherwise need to be maintained in separate accounts.

OCBC Expands Tokenization Strategy

The latest initiative builds on a series of blockchain and tokenization projects undertaken by OCBC during 2026.

In September, the bank completed a cross-border transaction involving tokenized US dollar deposits on Swift’s ledger with Citibank. During the same month, OCBC and two other Singapore banks completed domestic transactions involving tokenized Singapore dollar deposits on the same ledger.

The bank has also expanded its activities beyond deposits. In April, OCBC and its asset management unit, Lion Global Investors, launched a tokenized physical gold fund on a public blockchain.

The sequence of initiatives indicates that OCBC is exploring blockchain applications across payments, deposits and investment products rather than treating tokenization as a limited experimental technology.

Whale Platform Supports Near-Real-Time Liquidity

Ant International‘s Whale platform is central to the latest arrangement, providing infrastructure that connects blockchain assets across participating financial institutions.

The platform is intended to support more efficient cross-border treasury operations by allowing liquidity to be moved closer to real time. This could be particularly useful for businesses that operate across multiple jurisdictions and need to balance cash positions throughout the day.

The arrangement also demonstrates how tokenized deposits can be used for corporate treasury functions rather than being limited to digital asset trading.

By combining bank-issued tokenized deposits with blockchain-based infrastructure, the service could reduce reconciliation work, improve transaction visibility, and give corporate treasury teams greater control over cross-border liquidity.

The use of tokenized commercial bank deposits also distinguishes the system from cryptocurrency-based payment mechanisms. The underlying assets remain linked to deposits within the banking system while blockchain technology provides the infrastructure for recording and transferring them.

Tokenization Moves Toward Commercial Use

The partnership comes as banks and financial technology companies increasingly examine blockchain for practical applications in payments and financial operations.

For OCBC, the latest service adds another use case to its growing tokenization portfolio. For Ant International, the deployment expands the potential use of its Whale infrastructure for institutional treasury management.

The focus on Singapore-Malaysia liquidity transfers could also provide a foundation for broader cross-border applications if the model proves effective in commercial operations.

The launch signals a move toward using tokenization for everyday corporate financial management, with faster settlement, stronger transaction visibility, and improved liquidity mobility among its potential benefits.

The companies are therefore positioning tokenized deposits as an infrastructure tool for businesses seeking more flexible cross-border cash management, while continuing to build on the wider adoption of blockchain technology within regulated financial services.
