Algorand Surpasses 2.7 Million Post-Quantum Transactions

Blockchain Network Advances Quantum-Resistant Security With Falcon-1024

Algorand has processed more than 2.7 million transactions signed using post-quantum cryptography on its mainnet, marking a significant step in the blockchain network’s efforts to prepare for potential security threats posed by future quantum computers.

The milestone follows the introduction of native Falcon-1024 accounts in August 2026, which enabled users to authorize blockchain transactions using digital signatures designed to withstand attacks from quantum computers. The development represents progress toward strengthening transaction security as advances in quantum computing raise concerns about the long-term reliability of conventional cryptographic systems.

Algorand’s adoption of Falcon-1024 enables users to sign transactions with post-quantum cryptography directly on its mainnet, bringing quantum-resistant transaction authorization into practical use on a live blockchain network.

Falcon-1024 Brings Post-Quantum Signatures to Mainnet

Falcon-1024 is a digital signature scheme designed to provide security against attacks from both classical and quantum computers. It belongs to a broader category of post-quantum cryptographic technologies intended to protect digital communications and transactions against the capabilities of more powerful computing systems.

Conventional public-key cryptography underpins transaction authorization across many blockchain networks. However, sufficiently powerful quantum computers could eventually threaten certain widely used cryptographic algorithms, potentially exposing digital assets and compromising the integrity of blockchain transactions.

By supporting Falcon-1024 accounts, Algorand is working to address this long-term risk through an implementation that allows users to authorize transactions with post-quantum signatures. Processing more than 2.7 million such transactions indicates that the technology has moved beyond a purely experimental stage and is being used on the network.

The milestone also demonstrates the importance of integrating new cryptographic capabilities into existing blockchain infrastructure without abandoning established transaction-processing systems.

Developer Tools and Wallet Support Expand Access

Algorand has supported the rollout through software development kits, AlgoKit and Pera Wallet. These tools provide developers and users with ways to interact with the network and its post-quantum transaction functionality.

Software development kits and developer tooling can help application builders integrate new signing methods into blockchain-based products. Wallet support, meanwhile, is important because users need accessible interfaces to manage accounts and authorize transactions using the upgraded cryptographic capabilities.

The availability of these tools could help expand adoption among developers building applications that require stronger long-term security guarantees. It also provides a foundation for incorporating post-quantum signing into broader blockchain workflows as the ecosystem develops.

However, the practical security benefits depend on how the technology is implemented across the network and how users, applications and infrastructure providers adopt the new capabilities.

Algorand is now officially #1 in post-quantum across the entire industry 🥇

Over 2.7 MILLION post-quantum transactions on mainnet, more than any other blockchain on the planet.

Others are still talking about the quantum threat. We’ve been shipping since 2022, and nobody has caught us.

Full Quantum Resilience Remains a Work in Progress

Despite the transaction milestone, Algorand has not yet achieved complete quantum resilience across its entire protocol. Transaction authorization now supports post-quantum signatures, but the network’s consensus mechanisms continue to rely on classical cryptography.

Consensus is a critical component of blockchain infrastructure because it enables network participants to agree on transaction ordering and the state of the ledger. Protecting transaction signatures alone does not eliminate every potential cryptographic vulnerability within a blockchain system.

Algorand’s roadmap targets broader quantum resilience by the end of 2027. Planned work includes post-quantum multisignature support and research into protecting consensus mechanisms against quantum-related threats.

The distinction between quantum-resistant transaction signing and full protocol protection highlights the remaining technical work required to secure blockchain networks against future advances in quantum computing.

The next phase will require extending security measures beyond individual transaction signatures to other components that underpin network operations.

As the technology progresses, Algorand’s implementation could provide a useful example for blockchain developers evaluating how to introduce post-quantum cryptography into production systems. The longer-term outcome will depend on successful implementation, continued testing and the deployment of protections across the network’s broader cryptographic infrastructure.
