Polygon Acquires Coinme to Build Profitable Payments Business

Blockchain Firm Targets 2027 Profitability With Regulated Crypto Payments

Polygon Labs has completed its acquisition of Coinme, a U.S.-regulated cryptocurrency payments provider, as the blockchain developer expands into payment processing and seeks to establish a new revenue stream beyond its core infrastructure business. The company expects its regulated payments operation to become profitable in 2027, according to statements attributed to CEO Marc Boiron.

The acquisition gives Polygon greater control over converting cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and traditional currencies through its own operations. The move could allow the company to capture fees from payment processing and currency conversions rather than relying exclusively on third-party providers to connect blockchain networks with conventional financial systems.

The Coinme acquisition positions Polygon to operate more directly across the payment value chain, combining blockchain infrastructure with regulated services for converting and transferring money.

The transaction follows Polygon’s January introduction of the Open Money Stack, a framework designed to support stablecoin-based payments and simplify cross-border transfers. By combining the framework with Coinme’s regulated payments capabilities, Polygon aims to build an integrated service that connects digital assets with traditional money.

Polygon Shifts Focus From Blockchain Competition

Polygon’s strategy reflects a broader shift toward payment applications rather than competing primarily with other blockchain networks. The company aims to use blockchain technology, particularly its own network, as infrastructure for moving money while developing the commercial services that generate revenue from payment activity.

Blockchain networks typically provide transaction processing and settlement infrastructure, but they do not necessarily control the businesses responsible for customer onboarding, currency conversion, and payment distribution. When money enters or leaves a blockchain ecosystem, users often depend on external providers to complete those transactions.

This structure can limit the revenue opportunities available to blockchain developers, even when their networks facilitate substantial transaction activity.

Boiron indicated that Polygon previously had limited control over these customer relationships. He also alleged that competing blockchain networks had offered financial incentives to payment companies to redirect transaction flows away from Polygon.

By owning a regulated payments provider, Polygon intends to strengthen its relationships with customers and gain more influence over how transactions are routed. This could help the company retain a greater share of the commercial value generated when users move between traditional currencies and blockchain-based assets.

Competition With Established Payment Processors

Polygon is entering a market dominated by established payment companies with significantly larger transaction volumes. Visa reported payment volume exceeding $12.3 trillion in fiscal 2025, while Stripe processed approximately $1.9 trillion, according to figures cited in the report.

These figures illustrate the scale of the industry Polygon is seeking to enter. Although Coinme expands the company’s capabilities, Polygon will need to develop its customer base, transaction activity, and commercial partnerships before it can compete at a comparable scale.

The acquisition provides an operating foundation for that expansion, but it does not guarantee that customers will adopt Polygon’s payment services or that transaction volumes will grow sufficiently to support its profitability target.

BREAKING: Polygon Labs is now a U.S.-regulated payments business.

The Coinme acquisition is complete. It brings regulated U.S. money movement into Polygon Open Money Stack.

Stablecoins could offer an important opportunity because they enable digital transfers using tokens designed to maintain a relatively stable value against traditional currencies. Payment providers can use them to facilitate transfers across borders, although practical adoption also depends on regulatory compliance, liquidity, conversion costs and the availability of reliable financial partners.

Payments Revenue Differs From Blockchain Fees

Polygon’s planned payments business represents a different revenue source from fees generated by activity on its blockchain. The company aims to earn money through regulated payment services, including conversions and transfers, while transaction fees associated with network operations follow a separate economic structure.

According to Boiron, fees generated by blockchain transactions already offset Polygon‘s token emissions. He also estimated that millions of dollars in additional fees flow to validators and token stakers.

These distinctions are important because revenue earned by a blockchain network’s participants does not necessarily translate into income for the company developing or maintaining its infrastructure. Operating a payments business could give Polygon a more direct commercial relationship with transaction activity.

Polygon’s 2027 profitability target will depend on whether its regulated payment services can attract sufficient customers and transaction volume to generate sustainable revenue after operating costs.

The Coinme acquisition marks a strategic expansion from providing blockchain infrastructure toward managing more of the payment process itself. Its long-term success will depend on execution, regulatory requirements, competition, and the company’s ability to turn its expanded capabilities into a profitable business.
