Stripe and Plasma Expand Stablecoin Cards to Five Currencies

Partnership targets lower foreign exchange costs for global spending

Stripe and Plasma are partnering to expand multi-currency stablecoin-backed payment cards, enabling businesses and internationally mobile consumers to spend in a wider range of currencies while potentially reducing unnecessary currency conversions and foreign exchange costs.

Under the arrangement, Plasma will serve as a design partner as Stripe extends its stablecoin card infrastructure to additional fiat currencies, digital assets and markets. The initiative aims to make cross-border spending more convenient by allowing cardholders to use the currencies they already hold rather than converting their balances into US dollars before making purchases.

The expanded infrastructure will support five fiat currencies and stablecoin options, with availability in more than 30 countries and plans to extend coverage to over 100 countries in 2027.

Plasma is developing a financial account designed for people whose personal finances, assets and businesses span multiple countries. Everyday spending is the company’s initial focus, and its collaboration with Stripe will help shape a card experience tailored to customers managing money across borders.

Paul Faecks, chief executive of Plasma, said the partnership would allow the company to develop payment cards around the financial habits of internationally mobile customers, with the goal of making spending abroad more similar to domestic transactions.

Five currencies and broader stablecoin support

Stripe’s expanded stablecoin card infrastructure will support the US dollar, Brazilian real, euro, Mexican peso, and Colombian peso. The stablecoin offering will include OUSD alongside eligible stablecoins described as compliant with the requirements of the US GENIUS Act.

The broader currency selection is intended to address a limitation in payment products that rely heavily on dollar-denominated balances. Customers who hold money in other currencies may otherwise face additional conversion steps when making purchases in different markets.

For example, a cardholder with a euro balance could spend directly in euros instead of converting the funds into US dollars before completing a transaction. The same principle could help businesses operating in several countries issue cards in currencies that better match their local expenses.

Reducing unnecessary conversions could lower foreign exchange costs, although actual savings will depend on card terms, transaction routes, and applicable conversion fees.

The infrastructure is also designed to help businesses launch multi-currency card programs without developing their own underlying payment and digital asset systems. Stripe will provide the card infrastructure, while Plasma will contribute its understanding of the needs of customers managing finances across multiple jurisdictions.

Stablecoin payments move beyond dollar-focused products

Stablecoins enable users to hold and transfer digital assets designed to maintain a relatively stable value, commonly by tracking a traditional currency. Their use in international transfers and digital commerce has expanded interest in payment products that connect blockchain-based balances with established card networks.

Henri Stern, head of Stripe Crypto and co-founder and chief executive of Privy, said stablecoins already support global money transfers and that the collaboration with Plasma was intended to extend similar flexibility to everyday spending.

By connecting stablecoin infrastructure with multi-currency card programs, Stripe aims to give businesses a way to offer international payment services without independently building the underlying currency, blockchain, and card capabilities.

For Stripe, the expansion broadens the payment products available to businesses serving international customers. The platform can support card programs across more currencies and markets, potentially helping companies accommodate customers whose income, savings and spending are distributed across different countries.

For Plasma, the partnership provides access to established card infrastructure as it develops its financial account proposition. The arrangement allows the company to concentrate on the customer experience while relying on Stripe for key payment capabilities.

Automatic currency selection remains a future goal

The companies described the current expansion as an initial step toward a more comprehensive multi-currency payment experience. Their longer-term objective is to enable cardholders to spend from multiple balances, with the appropriate currency selected automatically when a purchase occurs.

Such functionality could simplify payments for users holding several currencies and reduce the need to manage separate conversion decisions before transactions. However, the companies have not disclosed a timeline for introducing automatic balance selection.

The planned expansion to more than 100 countries in 2027 also signals an ambition to make the card infrastructure available to a substantially larger international audience. Reaching that target will depend on market rollout, local requirements and the availability of supported payment services.

The partnership reflects a broader effort to integrate stablecoins into familiar financial products rather than limiting their use to digital asset transfers. If adoption grows, multi-currency stablecoin cards could provide consumers and businesses with another way to manage international spending while maintaining access to established payment networks.
