Blockchain Platform Pays $12 Million in Yields as Demand for Alternative RWA Assets Grows

re protocol

Re Protocol has attracted more than $375 million in deposits and distributed $12 million in cumulative earnings to users as of October 20, 2026, highlighting growing interest in blockchain-based access to reinsurance returns. The platform tokenizes reinsurance contracts through two stablecoin-based products, reUSD and reUSDe, which offer different yield profiles, liquidity arrangements, and exposure to potential underwriting losses.

Re aims to diversify decentralized finance (DeFi) yields beyond conventional tokenized government bonds and crypto lending by directing capital toward the reinsurance industry, a market valued at approximately $760 billion. The protocol’s reported yields exceed those of several established on-chain real-world asset (RWA) categories, although its structure introduces underwriting, liquidity, and third-party DeFi risks.

Reinsurance Offers an Alternative to Treasury-Based Yields

A significant share of on-chain RWA returns comes from short-term U.S. Treasury bills. Tokenized Treasury products collectively held approximately $14.7 billion in assets, representing about 38% of the on-chain RWA market, according to the report. Their average seven-day annual percentage yield was approximately 3.48%.

Other yield-generating products rely on private credit and cryptocurrency market activity. Maple’s syrupUSDC recorded an average 30-day annual percentage yield of approximately 5.1%, while Ethena’s sUSDe offered a yield of about 4.7%.

Although these products have different structures, their returns can respond to similar economic conditions, including interest rates, borrower creditworthiness, and demand for leveraged cryptocurrency positions. Falling interest rates and changes in lending conditions can affect returns across several of these markets simultaneously.

Reinsurance provides a different source of income. Insurance companies transfer portions of their financial exposure to reinsurers to manage potential claims and reduce earnings volatility. Reinsurers may subsequently transfer some of those risks to other firms.

Unlike returns primarily linked to interest rates or crypto funding conditions, reinsurance income is generated through underwriting activities. The report cited an annualized return of 11.40% in 2025 for the Re Global Catastrophe Bond Index, illustrating the potential returns available in parts of the traditional reinsurance market.

How Re Protocol’s Two Tokens Generate Returns

Re allows users to deposit stablecoins that support regulated reinsurance contracts. A portion of the capital is held as collateral in a U.S. trust bank account, while the remaining funds support on-chain liquidity and redemptions. Collateral requirements must satisfy applicable Cayman Islands Monetary Authority rules and the standards of the underlying insurers.

The protocol uses a tiered capital structure to allocate potential losses. Re’s own capital absorbs initial losses, followed by the mezzanine tranche represented by reUSDe. The senior tranche, represented by reUSD, receives higher priority in the loss-allocation structure.

reUSD is designed for users who prioritize liquidity and comparatively stable returns. It supports instant redemptions when sufficient liquidity is available. At least 50% of its historical peak deposit level is maintained on-chain to help meet withdrawal demand, with much of that buffer held in sUSDe.

As of October 2026, reUSD’s off-chain allocation earned the Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) plus a 250-basis-point spread, while its on-chain allocation earned the seven-day average sUSDe yield plus the same spread.

reUSDe, by contrast, is allocated entirely to off-chain reinsurance collateral. It earns SOFR plus an 850-basis-point spread, with redemptions scheduled quarterly and subject to collateral requirements and cash recoveries from expiring contracts.

The two-token structure allows Re to serve different investor preferences, balancing the senior product’s greater liquidity with the mezzanine product’s higher yield and greater exposure to losses.

The protocol initially focused on comparatively stable underwriting categories, including commercial property, vehicle liability, homeowners insurance and workers’ compensation. It has also been preparing to test catastrophe-risk coverage.

DeFi Integrations Expand Access but Introduce Risks

Re has expanded the use of reUSD across DeFi platforms, including Kamino, Jupiter Lend, Morpho and Pendle. According to the report, Kamino’s integration reached $20 million shortly after launch in August, while Jupiter Lend attracted $6 million within three hours.

A Morpho-powered vault using PT-reUSD collateral also surpassed $100 million in total value, allowing users to lend USDC and seek yields above 7%. Meanwhile, Pendle’s December 2026 PT-reUSD market recorded a maximum looping annual percentage yield above 32%, with total value locked exceeding $200 million as of September 28.

These integrations can increase the utility of reUSD but also expose holders to risks beyond the underlying reinsurance business. Problems involving lending markets, price oracles or leveraged positions could trigger liquidations and drain available liquidity.

The report described an incident in which a large purchase of YT-reUSD contributed to an approximately 3% decline in PT-reUSD’s price, triggering $36.4 million in cascading liquidations on Morpho. Although Re’s own smart contracts and reUSD were reportedly unaffected, the episode highlighted the risks associated with leveraged DeFi strategies.

The protocol also depends on sUSDe for part of its liquidity strategy, with approximately 53% of reUSD funds reportedly invested in the asset. A depegging event or substantial redemption pressure within the Ethena ecosystem could therefore affect Re’s liquidity.

Growth Potential Depends on Risk Management

Re’s reported deposits increased 45% from September to more than $375 million in October, positioning it as the largest on-chain reinsurance protocol by deposited funds, according to the report.

By bringing reinsurance exposure onto blockchain networks, Re is seeking to broaden the range of income-generating assets available to DeFi users while connecting traditional insurance capital with digital financial markets. Its longer-term prospects will depend on underwriting performance, transparent collateral management, redemption capacity, and the ability to contain risks arising from external DeFi integrations.
