JPMorgan to Bring JPM Coin to Ethereum to Expand Digital Payments

Bank targets institutional clients with broader blockchain access

JPMorgan Chase is preparing to bring its JPM Coin deposit token to the Ethereum blockchain, expanding its digital payment infrastructure beyond Base, the layer-2 network developed by Coinbase Global. The move is intended to improve access for cryptocurrency businesses and financial institutions seeking blockchain-based settlement services.

JPM Coin represents dollar deposits held at JPMorgan and enables participating institutions to transfer value through blockchain infrastructure. By expanding the token’s availability to Ethereum, the bank aims to reach a broader range of institutional customers and financial applications.

Emma Landriault, head of Kinexys Labs within JPMorgan’s blockchain division, said Ethereum was selected because of its comparatively deep liquidity and established use among institutional clients. The bank has not announced a launch date for the token on the network.

The planned Ethereum expansion marks another step in JPMorgan’s effort to connect traditional bank deposits with public blockchain infrastructure, potentially giving institutional clients more options for transferring money and settling financial transactions.

Ethereum expansion follows plans for additional networks

JPMorgan previously indicated that it intended to extend JPM Coin beyond Base, including plans to bring the token to the Canton Network. The latest initiative reflects the bank’s broader strategy of making its deposit-based digital currency available across multiple blockchain environments.

The expansion is intended to serve two principal groups. Cryptocurrency companies could use the token to facilitate blockchain payments, while traditional financial institutions could use it to settle trades and support transactions involving tokenized assets.

Ethereum provides an established environment for decentralized financial applications and digital assets. Its ecosystem includes infrastructure for issuing, transferring, and managing blockchain-based representations of financial instruments.

The bank’s decision does not mean JPM Coin will immediately become available to all Ethereum users. Access will depend on JPMorgan’s rollout arrangements, eligibility requirements and the infrastructure supporting the token.

Tokenization gains momentum in traditional finance

Tokenization involves representing assets, including bank deposits and securities, as digital tokens recorded on a blockchain. Financial institutions are exploring the technology because it could reduce settlement times, improve the movement of funds, and streamline processes that traditionally depend on multiple intermediaries.

Blockchain-based settlement can potentially allow financial transactions to be completed more quickly than conventional systems, which may involve operating-hour restrictions and reconciliation delays. Tokenized deposits can also help institutions move money while maintaining a connection to funds held within the banking system.

JPM Coin’s expansion could help institutional customers combine the familiarity of bank deposits with blockchain-based transfers, supporting faster settlement and new applications for tokenized financial assets.

However, many banks have so far favored private or permissioned blockchain networks over public blockchains for their tokenization initiatives.

In the United States, JPMorgan, Citigroup, Bank of America and Wells Fargo are among the institutions pursuing a shared network for tokenized deposits, alongside more than a dozen other banks. Such initiatives reflect growing interest in developing digital payment systems that preserve banking controls while incorporating blockchain technology.

Kinexys processes billions in daily transactions

JPMorgan’s proprietary blockchain platform, Kinexys, processes more than $7 billion in transactions daily, according to the reported figures. That represents a relatively small portion of the bank’s broader payments business, which handles approximately $12 trillion in daily payments.

Ethereum also has a substantial decentralized finance ecosystem. Nearly $50 billion in crypto assets were locked in Ethereum-based applications, according to data cited from DeFiLlama. This activity helps explain the network’s appeal to institutions seeking access to established digital asset markets and financial applications.

Internationally, JPMorgan is also participating in discussions involving Swift, the global interbank messaging network, as it develops the features and governance framework for a blockchain-based ledger. Swift said in July that 17 banks, including Citigroup and Wells Fargo, were preparing to test live transactions through the initiative. JPMorgan was not included in that announced pilot group.

Institutional adoption remains the central objective

JPMorgan‘s Ethereum plans highlight the financial industry’s continuing efforts to connect traditional banking services with blockchain-based markets. Expanding JPM Coin across networks could increase its potential uses in payments, trade settlement and tokenized asset transactions.

The commercial impact will depend on the timing of deployment, institutional adoption and the practical ability to integrate the token with existing financial systems. The bank has yet to disclose when Ethereum support will begin or provide further details about the rollout.

The initiative nevertheless signals a broader shift toward making regulated financial assets usable across blockchain networks, as banks seek faster settlement mechanisms and more flexible digital payment infrastructure.
