BitGo Adopts Chainlink CCIP for WBTC Cross-Chain Transfers

Move Aims to Strengthen Security and Streamline Asset Transfers

BitGo said that it would adopt Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, known as CCIP, as the default infrastructure for WBTC and all digital assets issued by the company in the future.

The move is intended to establish a unified framework for transferring BitGo-issued assets across blockchain networks while applying consistent security standards, risk controls and operational policies.

WBTC is a token designed to represent bitcoin on a one-to-one basis across blockchain networks other than Bitcoin. The asset allows bitcoin holders to use their holdings in decentralized finance applications, where they can trade, lend, or supply liquidity on networks such as Ethereum.

The transfer of digital assets between blockchains depends on cross-chain infrastructure, commonly referred to as bridges. These systems enable tokens and information to move between separate blockchain networks and have become an important component of the broader digital asset market.

However, cross-chain bridges have frequently been targeted by cyberattacks, increasing concerns about security and operational risks. The industry has therefore placed greater emphasis on building systems that can reduce vulnerabilities and provide stronger safeguards for users and institutions.

BitGo said that standardizing WBTC and future company-issued assets through Chainlink CCIP would allow it to use a more consistent security framework. The company added that the infrastructure would enable it to oversee asset transfers and operational policies through a single platform.

The decision was based on several factors, including Chainlink’s security architecture, institutional compliance capabilities and integrated risk-management controls, BitGo said.

Distributed Network and Transfer Controls

According to BitGo, every CCIP bridge route is supported by at least 16 independent node operators located across different organizations, geographic regions and hosting providers.

The distributed structure is intended to reduce the risk that a single technical failure, security breach or coordinated attack could interrupt cross-chain transfers. By spreading operational responsibilities among independent participants, the network seeks to improve resilience and limit potential points of failure.

CCIP also provides token issuers with tools to establish transfer limits and configure transaction controls. BitGo said these functions could serve as automated safeguards by delaying or restricting transactions when potentially suspicious activity is identified.

The company said the controls could help contain unusual transfer activity before it develops into a broader security incident.

BitGo also plans to use the Chainlink Cross-Chain Token standard to create unified versions of WBTC across the blockchain networks it supports. The approach is expected to reduce the need for separate token implementations while maintaining a consistent and verifiable security structure.

The company said the framework would also allow BitGo to retain ownership and control of its token deployments while expanding WBTC across additional networks.

Mike Belshe, BitGo’s chief executive officer and co-founder, said the company had maintained a security-focused strategy since its establishment. He indicated that Chainlink CCIP offered the operational controls, reliability and risk-management capabilities expected by institutional clients as BitGo expanded its support for digital assets across more blockchain ecosystems.

After a rigorous review, BitGo deprecated its legacy bridging provider & chose CCIP as its exclusive cross-chain infra given it’s the only solution that meets institutional security requirements. https://t.co/ceIBKawZm8 pic.twitter.com/oEYtZtNuFU

Institutional Focus and Expanding Cross-Chain Infrastructure

The transition comes as financial institutions and digital asset companies increasingly distribute assets across multiple blockchain networks. The growing use of cross-chain infrastructure has intensified competition among technology providers seeking to become the primary systems supporting institutional asset transfers.

It should be noted that there was a security incident involving Kelp DAO in April 2026 and that significant assets moved from LayerZero to Chainlink following the event. However, the reported figures and broader claims were not independently verified.

Chainlink said its infrastructure had supported more than $32 trillion in transaction value and secured over $110 billion across cross-chain applications and decentralized finance. The company also reported that its technology supported approximately 70% of the global decentralized finance ecosystem.

BitGo’s adoption of CCIP adds one of the largest wrapped Bitcoin products to Chainlink’s cross-chain infrastructure and could expand the protocol’s role in institutional digital asset transfers.

The next phase of the initiative will involve deploying WBTC through Chainlink CCIP and moving future BitGo-issued assets onto the same framework. The rollout is expected to indicate how quickly BitGo can transition from its existing infrastructure and establish a standardized system for managing assets across multiple blockchain networks.
