The disaster assistance community may benefit greatly from a new digital ID system. The Kare Survivor Wallet was created in collaboration with the Singaporean digital firm relief:digital to improve the openness and accountability of humanitarian relief. The end-to-end distribution time for disaster relief can be cut from several months to as little as 24 hours thanks to the Kare Survivor Wallet, a mobile app and blockchain technology that allows families affected by natural disasters to verify their identities and receive credits redeemable for essential supplies directly from Amazon.
DSC SVDP-USA’s national and local partners have referred families in Tennessee and Florida to use the platform first. By late spring, the initiative is expected to have reached hundreds of families throughout Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Using the immutability of the Algorand blockchain, the Kare Survivor Wallet integrates digital identification technologies with the distribution of relief cash.
The end goal is to make it possible for groups helping victims of natural disasters to build a form on the platform. Individuals can apply for funding by submitting information using their Kare digital ID, and the appropriate agency can then use that information to make direct deposits into individuals’ digital wallets.
With support from the American Red Cross, the platform was created via a partnership between the Algorand Foundation, the Disaster Services Corporation Society of St. Vincent de Paul USA (DSC SVDP-USA), and the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (National VOAD).
To foster the expansion of the Algorand blockchain ecosystem is the primary objective of the Algorand Foundation. It gave LoginID funding in 2021 to develop authentication APIs and software development kits (SDKs) for its blockchain platform.
When tragedy strikes in the United States, DSC SVDP-USA is there to help those in need via a variety of programs and services. More than 130 state and national disaster relief groups, representing almost 10 million volunteers, are coordinated by National VOAD.
