Bybit Taps OpenPayd to Streamline Global Fiat Settlement

Single API Targets Cross-Border Payment Complexity

Bybit has selected OpenPayd to support its global fiat operations, settlement flows, and fiat-to-crypto on- and off-ramping through a single API integration, according to the report. The arrangement brings account infrastructure, U.S. dollar SWIFT payments and foreign exchange services together under one provider.

The setup includes virtual international bank account numbers, or IBANs, connected to international payment rails. These accounts are intended to support institutional settlement requirements as well as retail users moving between fiat currencies and digital assets.

The partnership addresses a common operational challenge for high-volume crypto platforms. Deposits, withdrawals, and treasury transfers across multiple jurisdictions can require several banking, foreign exchange, and payment providers, creating additional reconciliation work and increasing the number of points where delays or errors can occur.

Bybit’s integration with OpenPayd is designed to consolidate banking infrastructure, USD settlement and foreign exchange into a single API, creating one fiat-crypto layer for global payment and settlement flows.

Moving Away From Fragmented Payment Infrastructure

Crypto platforms traditionally manage fiat banking, foreign exchange, liquidity, and crypto conversion through separate providers. Each service can operate on different settlement schedules and fee structures, requiring treasury teams to coordinate multiple systems and maintain separate reconciliation processes.

The Bybit-OpenPayd arrangement instead brings several of those functions together. The model could reduce the number of operational handoffs involved in cross-border transactions and give businesses a more unified view of payment activity.

However, consolidation also introduces a different set of risks. Relying on one provider for multiple critical functions can increase exposure to operational disruptions or changes affecting that provider. Companies adopting such infrastructure therefore need to assess licensing, banking relationships, custody arrangements, and operational resilience before moving substantial transaction volumes.

Stablecoins and the On-Ramp Challenge

Web3 payment systems commonly combine blockchain-based transfers with fiat on- and off-ramps. Stablecoins can provide a bridge between digital assets and traditional currencies, but their practical usefulness depends heavily on the banking and payment infrastructure supporting conversion.

A typical transaction may involve a digital asset transfer on a blockchain followed by conversion into fiat through an off-ramp provider. While blockchain settlement can occur relatively quickly, the overall process can still be constrained by banking hours, compliance checks, foreign exchange processing, and the availability of local payment rails.

The integration of foreign exchange into the settlement flow is intended to simplify that process. Users and businesses can potentially receive a single converted amount rather than coordinating separate banking and FX transactions. The effective exchange rate and any embedded spread remain important considerations when evaluating the actual cost of such transfers.

Treasury Controls Become More Important

For institutional users and decentralized organizations, payment infrastructure also involves governance and financial controls. Treasury operations may include stablecoin payments, fiat receipts, grants, payroll, and transfers between digital and traditional financial systems.

A unified platform can potentially reduce administrative complexity by bringing these activities into fewer operational channels. At the same time, organizations need clear permissions and approval processes to prevent excessive control from being concentrated with a single individual or system.

For businesses handling large fiat-crypto volumes, the consolidation could lower reconciliation demands and simplify treasury operations, but the benefits depend on transparent fees, reliable banking access, and appropriate compliance controls.

Compliance and Costs Remain Key Issues

Companies evaluating Web3 payment infrastructure typically need to examine custody arrangements, supported currencies and jurisdictions, payment rails, on- and off-ramp coverage and the complete fee structure. Compliance capabilities such as know-your-business procedures, sanctions screening and transaction monitoring are also central considerations.

Published pricing from financial technology providers illustrates how costs can extend beyond headline transaction fees. Wire charges, intermediary bank fees, SWIFT costs, foreign exchange spreads and blockchain network fees can all affect the final expense of moving money.

A unified provider may reduce some costs associated with multiple intermediaries, but consolidation does not automatically eliminate hidden charges. Finance teams therefore need to obtain detailed fee schedules and understand how exchange rates and spreads are calculated before committing treasury volumes.

Regulatory Developments Could Shape Adoption

Regulatory requirements affecting crypto payments and fiat on- and off-ramps are becoming increasingly important across jurisdictions. Know-your-business requirements, sanctions screening and transaction-monitoring obligations can complicate the operation of a global single-API model when rules differ between markets.

The approach could eventually extend beyond cryptocurrency exchanges to payment processors, payroll platforms and decentralized organization infrastructure providers that manage both fiat and digital assets.

The report indicates that the next major test for the arrangement will be operational performance, including settlement reliability, transparency and the ability to maintain banking connectivity across jurisdictions. While consolidating payment infrastructure can simplify operations, businesses may still need contingency arrangements to protect against disruptions involving a critical provider.

The broader trend points toward tighter integration between traditional banking rails, foreign exchange, and blockchain-based payments as companies seek to make global fiat-crypto settlement more efficient and easier to manage.
