Celo Adds Six Ripio Stablecoins to Boost Latin American Payments

Integration targets cross-border transfers and onchain foreign exchange across six markets

Celo has integrated six stablecoins issued by Latin American crypto company Ripio, expanding access to local-currency digital assets on its blockchain network and supporting cross-border payments and on-chain foreign exchange transactions.

The deployment brings Ripio’s complete wFIAT stablecoin suite to Celo, covering the Argentine peso (ARS), Brazilian real (BRL), Mexican peso (MXN), Colombian peso (COP), Chilean peso (CLP), and Peruvian sol (PEN). The tokens are designed to provide digital representations of currencies used across six major Latin American markets.

The integration aims to facilitate local-currency transactions across blockchain infrastructure, allowing users and applications to explore cross-border payments and on-chain foreign exchange through Textile Protocol.

The launch expands the range of fiat-linked assets available within Celo’s ecosystem, which focuses on mobile-accessible financial services and payments. By bringing multiple regional currencies onto one network, the integration could help developers build applications serving individuals and businesses that need to transfer value across national borders.

Ripio expands its wFIAT stablecoin offering

Ripio’s six-token deployment includes wARS, wBRL, wMXN, wCOP, wCLP and wPEN. Each token corresponds to a different Latin American currency, providing a foundation for blockchain-based transactions denominated in local units rather than relying exclusively on the U.S. dollar.

Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a stable value relative to a reference asset, such as a national currency. Their use in payments can reduce exposure to the price volatility associated with cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, although the stability of any particular token depends on its backing, redemption arrangements, and issuer operations.

For Latin American users and businesses, local-currency stablecoins could provide an alternative way to move digital value while reducing the need to convert every transaction into dollars. They may also help financial applications support payments and currency exchanges across markets with different domestic monetary systems.

However, the announcement did not specify the reserve arrangements, redemption terms, transaction volumes, or liquidity available for each wFIAT token. These details will be important in determining how effectively the assets can support large-scale commercial payments.

Textile Protocol supports onchain foreign exchange

The integration also identifies Textile Protocol as part of the infrastructure supporting cross-border payment flows and onchain foreign exchange, commonly known as FX.

Onchain FX enables currency exchanges to be executed through blockchain-based systems rather than relying entirely on conventional intermediaries and offchain settlement processes. Depending on the implementation, such systems can allow transactions to be processed through smart contracts and connected decentralized applications.

By combining six local-currency stablecoins with on-chain FX infrastructure, the initiative could give developers a broader set of building blocks for payment services, currency conversion, and regional financial applications.

Businesses operating across Latin American markets could potentially use such infrastructure to transfer value between supported currencies. Developers may also be able to incorporate the tokens into payment platforms and other financial applications, subject to availability, liquidity and applicable regulations.

The practical benefits will depend on whether users can access reliable conversion rates, sufficient trading liquidity and efficient redemption mechanisms. The announcement did not provide details on supported exchange pairs, transaction fees or settlement times.

Latin America’s digital payments market remains a key opportunity

Latin America presents opportunities for digital payment providers seeking to improve cross-border transfers and access to financial services. Differences in domestic currencies and the cost of international payments can create demand for systems that make moving money between markets more efficient.

Blockchain-based stablecoins are one approach to addressing these challenges, but adoption depends on more than technical availability. Regulatory requirements, local payment integrations, user access, and confidence in issuers remain important considerations.

Celo’s mobile-oriented blockchain infrastructure and Ripio’s regional currency offering could provide a basis for expanding local-currency payment applications. Textile Protocol’s role in supporting onchain FX adds another component to that potential ecosystem.

The launch establishes network availability for all six announced tokens, but it does not by itself demonstrate widespread usage or commercial adoption.

The next indicators of progress will include transaction activity, liquidity across currency pairs, integration by payment providers, and evidence that the stablecoins can support practical cross-border transfers at competitive costs.
