Circle Launches Agent Stack for USDC-Powered API Payments

New Infrastructure Targets Pay-Per-Use Services for AI Agents

Circle has introduced Agent Stack, a new infrastructure offering designed to allow application programming interface providers to accept payments in USD Coin, or USDC, from autonomous software agents.

The initiative is intended to support pay-per-use pricing models and create additional revenue opportunities for API providers as artificial intelligence agents take on a larger role in performing digital tasks. Circle’s new tools could enable software services to be discovered, accessed and paid for directly by autonomous systems without requiring conventional customer accounts, subscription plans or checkout processes.

The development is linked to the emergence of an agent-focused internet in which autonomous software can perform activities such as retrieving data, enriching business leads and conducting automated web-based tasks with limited human involvement.

Unlike traditional users, software agents may require a direct service endpoint, a clearly defined price and an automated payment mechanism. Circle said Agent Stack combines instant USDC transactions with tools including the x402 protocol to help API providers make their services accessible to autonomous agents.

Circle’s Agent Stack is designed to enable API providers to accept USDC payments directly from autonomous software agents and introduce pay-per-use business models for digital services.

Agent Marketplace Expands Access to Digital Services

Circle has also launched an Agent Marketplace featuring APIs structured for use by autonomous software. The marketplace currently includes services across three main areas: data and intelligence, digital infrastructure and real-world execution.

Available services include market data feeds, browser automation tools and logistics-related capabilities. The platform is intended to make these services easier for software agents to discover, access and pay for through automated processes.

The marketplace could provide a common environment in which API providers offer specialized services while autonomous agents select and purchase individual functions based on their operational requirements.

Circle’s approach focuses on reducing the friction associated with traditional digital-service billing. Under a pay-per-use model, an agent could make a small payment for a single API request, such as obtaining financial information or enriching a business lead.

Microtransactions of this type have historically been difficult to support because of payment processing costs, invoicing requirements and administrative complexity. USDC’s relatively low transaction costs and rapid settlement could make smaller payments more practical when used at scale.

Developers Gain Simplified Payment Integration

Developers integrating with Agent Stack are expected to gain access to agent-compatible wallets and a unified API connection designed to accept payments from compliant autonomous systems.

The infrastructure is intended to reduce the operational requirements associated with billing, invoicing and payment reconciliation. Rather than developing separate payment systems for individual services, API providers could use a single integration to support automated USDC transactions.

The platform is intended to make small, per-request API payments economically viable while reducing the billing and payment-processing burden for developers.

The agent economy remains at an early stage, but companies are increasingly developing infrastructure for software systems capable of completing tasks on behalf of users. As autonomous agents become more widely deployed, payment networks that allow them to purchase data, computing resources and other digital services may become an important component of the broader technology ecosystem.

A new customer is forming for API providers: autonomous agents.

With x402 and Circle Agent Stack, agents can discover your API, pay per request in USDC, and use your service without a checkout page, account setup, or subscription.

Circle’s initiative also reflects the expanding role of stablecoins beyond cryptocurrency trading and decentralized finance. Stablecoins are increasingly being used for on-chain settlement, international transfers and other payment applications because their value is generally linked to traditional currencies.

USDC remains one of the largest stablecoins and is widely used across blockchain-based financial services and payment networks. Circle’s regulatory activities have also strengthened its position as it expands into new areas of digital financial infrastructure.

By embedding USDC payments into APIs, Circle is seeking to connect stablecoin infrastructure with the emerging machine economy and support automated commerce between software agents and digital service providers.

The company expects to continue reducing barriers to participation as the Agent Stack ecosystem develops. The initiative could help establish new methods for monetizing APIs while supporting wider adoption of autonomous-agent technologies across data services, digital infrastructure and real-world business applications.
