Coinbase has initiated a significant transformation of its Web3 ecosystem, rebranding and expanding the functionality of both its Ethereum layer-2 network and wallet infrastructure. The move, unveiled during the “A New Day One” event held in Los Angeles, signals the company’s broader ambition to redefine decentralized interactions through a comprehensive platform. The latest development introduces the Base app — a multifunctional solution that integrates social media, cryptocurrency trading, digital payments, and decentralized applications into a singular mobile experience.
Previously known as the Coinbase Wallet, the revamped Base app reflects a shift in Coinbase’s strategy toward delivering a more inclusive and accessible Web3 experience. This newly designed platform enables users to perform a wide range of activities including content sharing, messaging, and income generation through social posts. It also supports trading of digital assets and access to mini applications, all embedded within the same interface. Built on open protocols, the Base app incorporates Farcaster for decentralized social feeds and introduces key features such as Base Pay, which facilitates near-instant payments using USDC with a tap-to-pay mechanism.
New Identity Layer and Enhanced Network Performance
Another core component of this update is the introduction of “Sign in with Base,” a universal identity layer that simplifies user access across decentralized apps. This identity framework is designed to improve the user experience by enabling seamless authentication, reducing the reliance on traditional login methods.
Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network has also undergone a notable rebranding, transitioning from the original name “Base” to the more distinct “Basechain.” This change signifies a deliberate move to decouple the network’s identity from its parent company, positioning Basechain as a standalone infrastructure for Web3 development. Accompanying this rebranding is a major technical enhancement dubbed Flashblocks, which significantly reduces block production times from two seconds to just 200 milliseconds. This upgrade represents a tenfold increase in processing speed, placing Basechain among the fastest-performing layer-2 solutions currently available.

Developer Onboarding and Strategic Ecosystem Growth
In support of its mission to drive broader adoption of Web3 technologies, Coinbase has launched the Base Build initiative. This program is designed to attract and support a community of one million developers through a combination of grants, technical tools, and an accessible development dashboard. By leveraging this initiative, developers can more efficiently launch mini applications within the Base app, ranging from gaming platforms to DeFi protocols and prediction markets.
Coinbase also introduced a new feature called MagicSpend, aimed at streamlining onchain transactions by allowing users to cover gas fees directly from their Coinbase balance. This convenience is expected to remove a significant barrier to entry for less experienced users, potentially expanding participation across the ecosystem.
Additionally, a strategic integration with Shopify via the Base Pay feature is expected to bring decentralized payments to mainstream commerce. Merchants will soon be able to accept USDC payments, with consumers in the U.S. eligible for 1% cashback, further incentivizing adoption of crypto-based transactions.
Path Toward a Web3 Super App
Currently in beta, the Base app represents Coinbase’s vision of a unified Web3 experience that combines communication, commerce, identity, and application access within a single interface. With the rebranding of its network to Basechain and the rollout of infrastructure upgrades and developer tools, the company appears poised to position itself as a leading force in the emerging landscape of decentralized super apps.
