Renowned filmmaker David Goyer, best known for his screenwriting work on the Blade trilogy, The Dark Knight, and Apple’s Foundation series, has announced the development of a new science fiction universe named Emergence. This ambitious project is being constructed on Incention, a newly introduced blockchain platform also initiated by Goyer, with the intent of combining storytelling with decentralized technology.
A New Vision for Sci-Fi in the Web3 Era
Emergence is set to be a Web3-powered science fiction world incorporating themes such as interstellar travel, ancient relic hunting, and cosmic anomalies like white holes. What sets the project apart is its collaborative approach to world-building, where fans will be invited to co-create characters alongside professional writers and creators. This initiative aims to democratize content creation and broaden access to the entertainment industry.
Goyer has reportedly emphasized that Web3 could serve as a powerful tool for emerging filmmakers to break into Hollywood. By enabling a community-driven approach to intellectual property (IP) development, the filmmaker envisions a bottom-up model where fans become active participants in shaping storylines, characters, and world-building, rather than remaining passive consumers of content.
A Collaborative Platform for Creative Development
During a panel discussion at the Consensus Toronto event hosted by CoinDesk, Goyer described his goal to empower the audience through direct participation in the creative process. He indicated that users would have opportunities to develop characters that could eventually be integrated into various content formats such as podcasts and animated series. The collaborative nature of Emergence aligns closely with the decentralized, user-first philosophy of Web3 technologies.
Both Incention and Emergence are being developed on the infrastructure of Story Protocol, a platform dedicated to managing IP in the Web3 space. Story Protocol is building blockchain systems that allow for ownership, licensing, and royalty distribution to be governed by the IP creators themselves, without the need for intermediaries.
SLY Lee, a representative from Story Protocol, explained that each intellectual property on the platform operates under its own set of licensing and royalty-sharing rules. This system enables users to remix, license, and build upon existing IPs, with the potential to share in the benefits, provided the original IP owner’s terms allow for it. The framework is designed to promote collaboration while protecting creators’ rights in a decentralized environment.
