MoneyGram Joins XDC Network as Institutional Blockchain Validator

Remittance giant expands its role in blockchain infrastructure and governance

MoneyGram has joined XDC Network as an institutional validator, expanding its involvement in blockchain infrastructure as the global remittance company explores new ways to support digital payments, trade finance, and real-world asset markets.

The appointment marks a shift beyond using blockchain networks for payment services toward participating directly in their operation and governance. MoneyGram, which has operated for 85 years and serves approximately 60 million customers, will join a validator group that includes financial institutions, telecommunications companies and digital asset service providers.

By becoming an XDC validator, MoneyGram will help verify transactions, maintain the network’s shared ledger and participate in governance decisions, extending its blockchain strategy beyond payment settlement.

XDC Network is a Layer-1 blockchain designed for payments, trade finance and real-world assets. Its existing institutional validators include SBI Holdings, Deutsche Telekom, NTT DOCOMO Global, Clear Street, Hex Trust and Taurus. The network has said its validator group comprises more than 20 institutional operators.

MoneyGram expands its multichain strategy

MoneyGram began exploring public blockchain infrastructure in 2019 and has used the Stellar network since October 2021 to facilitate conversions between USDC and cash for wallet users.

In June 2026, the company expanded its digital asset offerings by launching MGUSD, a dollar-backed stablecoin issued on Stellar. The token adds a digital dollar option to MoneyGram’s broader payments ecosystem.

The company has also expanded its infrastructure involvement across other networks in 2026, becoming a node operator on Midnight and a validator on Tempo and Solana. Its latest appointment on XDC adds another blockchain to its growing portfolio.

Each network serves different potential applications, including remittance settlement, privacy-focused transactions, consumer payments and institutional financial services. XDC’s emphasis on trade finance and tokenized real-world assets offers MoneyGram an additional position in blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

The company must stake XDC tokens to participate as a validator. This financial commitment gives it exposure to the network’s native digital asset while supporting its role in transaction validation and governance.

Institutional validators strengthen XDC’s position

MoneyGram’s participation adds a global remittance provider to a validator group already featuring financial services companies, custodians and telecommunications operators.

The company’s extensive international payments business and retail distribution network distinguish it from organizations focused primarily on digital asset infrastructure. MoneyGram operates through a global network of hundreds of thousands of retail locations, giving it experience in moving funds across different markets and regulatory environments.

XDC views the participation of established financial and telecommunications companies as a way to strengthen the institutional credibility of its blockchain infrastructure. A broader validator base can support the network’s security and governance, although the benefits also depend on the distribution of validation power and the effectiveness of its operating arrangements.

XDC co-founder Ritesh Kakkad has linked the network’s development to the future of global payments, including a potential role for artificial intelligence agents that initiate transactions on behalf of users. Such applications remain a longer-term prospect rather than an immediate outcome of MoneyGram’s appointment.

MGUSD remains on Stellar for now

Despite the new validator role, the announcement does not establish that MoneyGram’s existing customer payment flows or its MGUSD stablecoin will move to XDC.

MGUSD continues to operate on Stellar, meaning MoneyGram’s XDC appointment currently represents an infrastructure and governance commitment rather than a confirmed change to its customer-facing settlement services.

MoneyGram Chief Product and Technology Officer Luke Tuttle indicated that the company intended to contribute directly to XDC’s infrastructure while pursuing more open and interoperable ways to move money internationally.

The distinction matters because operating a validator does not automatically integrate a company’s payment products with that blockchain. Any future movement of MGUSD or remittance transactions onto XDC would require separate technical and commercial development.

MoneyGram is joining @XDCNetwork as an institutional validator, taking an active role in securing the network.

This is another step in our goal to build a more open infrastructure for global money movement. https://t.co/cKC3OBT9CI

Future integration remains the key milestone

MoneyGram‘s expanding validator positions suggest that the company is building experience across multiple blockchain ecosystems rather than relying on a single network. Such a strategy could provide flexibility as digital payments, tokenized assets, and institutional blockchain applications develop.

However, staking XDC also exposes MoneyGram to the value fluctuations and other risks associated with holding a network-native token. This differs from MGUSD’s intended role as a dollar-backed stablecoin for users seeking dollar-denominated value.

The next significant development to watch will be whether MoneyGram integrates MGUSD or its existing payment services with XDC, turning its infrastructure participation into a direct benefit for customers and institutional partners. Until such an integration is announced, the appointment primarily strengthens MoneyGram’s role in blockchain network operations and XDC’s institutional validator base.
