Solana has entered into a strategic collaboration with South Korean fintech company KSNET to expand the use of blockchain-based payments across the country’s merchant ecosystem.

The partnership, established through a memorandum of understanding between KSNET and the Solana Foundation, is expected to explore the integration of Solana’s payment infrastructure with a network serving more than 330,000 merchants. The initiative could provide a pathway for digital asset payment technologies to reach a broader range of mainstream businesses in South Korea.

KSNET operates a large payment and settlement network and processes nearly $4 billion in monthly transaction volume. The companies plan to examine how Solana’s blockchain infrastructure can be incorporated into KSNET’s existing merchant payment systems while maintaining compatibility with South Korea’s established financial framework.

The Solana-KSNET collaboration aims to bring blockchain-based payment capabilities to more than 330,000 merchants while expanding the use of digital asset technology in South Korea’s mainstream commerce sector.

Initial Projects to Test Solana Pay Integration

The partnership will initially focus on two proof-of-concept projects designed to evaluate the technical and commercial potential of blockchain-powered payments.

One project will examine the integration of Solana Pay into KSNET’s existing online and offline merchant payment infrastructure. The companies intend to demonstrate that blockchain-native transactions can operate efficiently within conventional payment environments without disrupting existing merchant systems.

The project is also expected to assess whether Solana Pay can remain compatible with modern financial technologies while supporting payment processes already used by businesses and consumers. The results could help determine how blockchain infrastructure may be deployed alongside traditional payment networks rather than functioning as a separate system.

The initial proof-of-concept projects will test whether Solana Pay can operate across KSNET’s online and offline merchant network while remaining compatible with South Korea’s existing payment infrastructure.

The collaboration will also explore artificial intelligence-driven commerce through the use of the x402 protocol. The companies plan to assess how the protocol could support automated or AI-assisted payment functions within KSNET’s internally tested AI payment network.

The x402 protocol is expected to be evaluated as part of broader efforts to develop more advanced payment capabilities that could support emerging forms of digital commerce. The companies have not disclosed a timetable for the deployment of commercial AI-based payment services.

Compliance and Korean Won Settlement Remain Central

Regulatory compliance is expected to be a major component of the proposed payment framework. KSNET indicated that it plans to incorporate strict anti-money laundering measures to help prevent illicit funds from entering the payment network.

The payment model is also expected to remain aligned with South Korean financial regulations and continue using the country’s existing Korean won settlement system. Maintaining compatibility with local settlement infrastructure could help reduce liquidity concerns commonly associated with digital asset transfers and limit exposure to exchange-rate volatility.

KSNET Chief Executive Officer Park Han-han indicated that the company intended to apply its experience in payment processing and settlement services to develop a secure payment environment for consumers. He added that the company would focus on combining its existing financial infrastructure with emerging blockchain technologies while maintaining strong security and regulatory standards.

KSNET plans to combine anti-money laundering controls with Korean won-based settlement, a structure intended to reduce liquidity and foreign-exchange risks associated with digital asset payments.

Following the completion of technical testing and verification, Solana and KSNET are expected to gradually develop commercialization plans that comply with South Korea’s financial regulations.

The partnership reflects growing interest in integrating blockchain technology into established payment systems rather than replacing existing financial infrastructure. If the proof-of-concept projects produce favorable results, the collaboration could create a larger role for blockchain-based payments in South Korea’s retail and digital commerce markets.
