IIT Madras (India) Launches AI, Blockchain Lab for Indian Artisans

From the weaving centers of Varanasi to digital marketplaces, traditional Indian craftsmanship is gaining access to new technology as institutions seek to improve authenticity, visibility, and market access for artisans.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has launched an Artisan Empowerment Lab in partnership with the Varanasi-based Human Welfare Association to help digitize traditional crafts and connect craftspeople more directly with buyers. The initiative will combine artificial intelligence and blockchain technology to create digital records of artisans and their products.

The lab will use AI and blockchain to establish a digital registry of artisans and craft products, verify product origins and create a more transparent marketplace for traditional Indian crafts.

Blockchain to Verify Craft Authenticity

The project is designed to connect established craft traditions with digital systems that can record information about products and their makers. A central component will be the use of QR codes on authentic Geographical Indication-tagged products.

Consumers will be able to scan the QR code attached to a product and access information intended to verify its authenticity. The system will also identify the artisan responsible for making the product, providing buyers with greater visibility into the origin and production of traditional crafts.

The first phase will focus on five GI-recognized craft categories from the Varanasi region. These include Banaras Brocade and Sarees, Varanasi Soft Stone Jali work, Banaras Gulabi Meenakari, Varanasi Wooden Lacquerware and Toys, and Banaras Metal Repousse Craft.

The digital registration system is intended to help distinguish genuine products from imitations while giving artisans a more visible presence in the marketplace. The initiative could also provide consumers with greater confidence when purchasing heritage products whose origins and craftsmanship may otherwise be difficult to verify.

IIT Madras and HWA Sign Agreement

IIT Madras and the Human Welfare Association signed a memorandum of understanding on Aug. 25 to establish the lab. Rajani Kant, a Padma Shri award recipient known for his work involving Geographical Indications, signed the agreement for HWA. Prof. Manu Santhanam, dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research at IIT Madras, signed on behalf of the institute.

IIT Madras Director Prof. Veezhinathan Kamakoti was also present during the agreement signing.

The project is expected to begin working directly with artisans in the coming months, starting with the five selected craft categories. The initial deployment will provide a testing ground for the technology before any broader expansion.

Technology Aims to Improve Artisan Income

Traditional crafts such as Gulabi Meenakari, which is recognized for detailed enamel work, and Varanasi wooden toys form part of the region’s established cultural and economic heritage. By connecting individual products with verified artisans, the initiative seeks to strengthen recognition of authentic craftsmanship and reduce the impact of imitation products.

Kamakoti said traditional Indian arts and crafts have significant cultural and economic importance and could gain greater domestic and international recognition through improvements in technology, design, quality standards, branding and market access.

The initiative is intended to help artisans reach customers more directly, potentially reducing dependence on intermediaries and enabling craftspeople to capture a greater share of the value generated by their work.

The lab will also explore how digital tools can preserve information about traditional production methods and individual artisans. Such records could become useful for documenting craft communities while supporting efforts to promote established products in wider markets.

Varanasi Pilot Could Expand Nationwide

The project begins in Varanasi, a major center for GI-registered products and traditional craftsmanship. Rajani Kant said the model could eventually be expanded beyond the region to benefit artisans and other producers across India.

The broader ambition includes creating a technology-supported ecosystem in which artisans can establish digital identities, authenticate their products and gain improved access to buyers. Such a system could also help customers understand where a product originated and who produced it.

The project is being positioned as part of broader efforts to connect local manufacturing and traditional skills with national and international markets. If the Varanasi pilot proves effective, its approach could potentially be adapted for other Indian craft clusters with recognized geographical and cultural identities.

By combining product authentication, artisan identification and digital marketplace access, the Artisan Empowerment Lab seeks to give traditional crafts a stronger presence in the modern economy while supporting the preservation of India’s cultural heritage.
