Solana Brings Stablecoins to Africa’s Biggest IPO

solana blockchain

Solana is expanding its role in real-world financial markets as investors can now use stablecoins to subscribe to Africa’s largest initial public offering, linking blockchain-based payments with Nigeria’s conventional equity market.

The offering involves Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, which opened its IPO on Sept. 14. The company is offering 4.1 billion shares at 525 naira each, targeting about $1.6 billion in proceeds. The subscription period runs through Oct. 13.

NectarFi, a Nigerian financial platform built on Solana, has enabled investors holding stablecoins to participate through infrastructure provided by GetEquity. The minimum subscription through NectarFi is 10,000 naira, or about $7.50. The initiative connects stablecoin-based funds held on Solana with a conventional IPO settlement process, giving eligible investors an additional digital route into one of Africa’s largest equity offerings.

Stablecoins Connect Blockchain and Traditional Markets

The arrangement does not turn the Dangote shares themselves into blockchain tokens. Instead, the digital infrastructure provides an on-ramp through which stablecoins can be converted into valid subscriptions that are ultimately processed through Nigeria’s established securities infrastructure.

That distinction is significant because the development represents the use of blockchain payment rails alongside an existing public equity market rather than replacing the traditional market infrastructure. The shares remain subject to the conventional issuance and settlement process.

The development comes as Nigeria and other African markets seek ways to broaden participation in capital markets while digital assets become increasingly integrated with financial services.

The Dangote refinery IPO is expected to raise about 2.15 trillion naira, or roughly $1.6 billion, from the sale of 4.1 billion shares. A greenshoe option could increase the proceeds if demand exceeds the base offering. Reuters has reported that the refinery is valued at about $47 billion and currently has production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

Solana Ecosystem Adds Financial and Industrial Applications

The IPO development is part of a wider series of changes across the Solana ecosystem. Imperial Perps has introduced Armada, a decentralized automated market maker designed for perpetual contracts, while Peaq has worked with Doosan Robotics to connect collaborative robots with Solana-based infrastructure.

Another significant development has involved the network itself. Solana activated a reduction in its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds on Sept. 18, bringing the target cadence to four slots per second. The change is part of the phased SIMD-0525 upgrade, which is ultimately targeting 200-millisecond slots.

The 250-millisecond upgrade improves the frequency at which wallets, trading applications, and other blockchain services receive updated information, although it does not represent a proportional increase in transaction throughput.

The faster cadence was accompanied by adjustments to network limits designed to maintain stability. The change therefore focuses more on reducing latency and improving data freshness than on simply increasing the number of transactions the network can process.

Faster Slots Change Validator Timing

The latest slot reduction also shortens Solana’s epoch duration from roughly 36 hours to about 30 hours. That change can affect validators, staking reward timing, and applications that depend on epoch boundaries.

The SIMD-0525 program has been introduced through multiple stages rather than a single network-wide change. Earlier reductions moved slot times to 350 milliseconds and then 300 milliseconds before the latest 250-millisecond target was activated.

The remaining objective is a 200-millisecond slot time. That step depends on continued monitoring of network stability and validator performance, particularly block-skip rates. As timing windows become shorter, validators have less time to propagate blocks across the network.

The leader control window has also been reduced from 1.2 seconds to one second, placing additional emphasis on rapid block propagation and validator infrastructure.

Blockchain Access to African Capital Markets

The stablecoin-enabled Dangote IPO provides a practical example of how blockchain networks can be used alongside traditional financial infrastructure. It also gives Solana an application beyond decentralized trading by connecting its ecosystem with a major public equity offering.

The broader significance will depend on how regulators, financial institutions, and investors respond to similar models. For investors, the structure demonstrates how stablecoins can potentially serve as a funding rail for conventional financial products without requiring the underlying securities to become blockchain-native assets.

Together, the IPO integration and Solana’s faster network cadence highlight the ecosystem’s expanding focus on real-world financial applications, lower-latency infrastructure, and connections between digital assets and established capital markets.
