Google Study Ranks Cardano #2 in Quantum-Resistant Blockchains

Google Research Highlights Blockchain Preparedness

Cardano

A recent study conducted by Google Quantum AI has evaluated major blockchain networks based on their readiness to withstand potential threats from future quantum computing technologies. The analysis focused on how effectively these networks could transition to post-quantum cryptography, a next-generation security framework designed to counter the computational power of quantum machines.

According to the findings shared by a Cardano representative, the evaluation considered several technical factors. These included whether blockchain networks expose public keys, support key rotation or upgrades, and the duration for which transactions remain vulnerable before confirmation. These criteria were used to determine the relative resilience of each network against theoretical quantum attacks.

Cardano Emerges as a Strong Contender

Cardano secured the second position in the ranking, indicating a high level of preparedness. The study suggested that Cardano’s architecture inherently enhances security by delaying the exposure of public keys. This is achieved through its extended unspent transaction output model, which ensures that spending keys remain hashed until transactions are executed.

Such a design reportedly reduces the window of opportunity for malicious actors, as attackers cannot access critical key information before a transaction occurs. This structural advantage places Cardano alongside networks such as Dogecoin, Zcash, and Bitcoin Cash in what the research categorized as a second-tier group. These networks were described as having inherent architectural benefits compared to others in the ecosystem.

🧵Quantum Security Ranking based on the Google Quantum AI paper (summarized with Claude):

Algorand Leads with Live Testing Capabilities

The study identified Algorand as the top-ranked blockchain in terms of quantum resistance. This distinction was attributed to its successful testing of quantum-resistant transactions in a live environment and its ability to rotate cryptographic keys. The research implied that Algorand is currently the only network with a theoretical capability to migrate users to quantum-safe cryptographic systems if such threats were to materialize immediately.

Vulnerability Tiers and Exposure Risks

Other blockchain networks were grouped into categories reflecting varying levels of vulnerability. Platforms such as XRP Ledger, Litecoin, and Bitcoin were classified as vulnerable, but in the process of preparing for future threats. The report indicated that these networks expose public keys more frequently, increasing their susceptibility to quantum-based attacks.

Meanwhile, Ethereum and Solana were described as having the broadest attack surfaces. This classification was based on the continuous visibility of public keys, which could provide more opportunities for potential attackers in a quantum-enabled environment.

Industry Preparing for a Distant Threat

Despite these findings, the study emphasized that quantum computing threats remain largely theoretical. Experts reportedly believe that the development of quantum machines capable of breaking current cryptographic systems is still at least a decade away. Nonetheless, many blockchain networks are proactively planning upgrades to address this future risk.

For example, the Ethereum Foundation has indicated that it is actively working toward a quantum-safe transition, potentially targeting implementation around 2029.

XRPL Advances Post-Quantum Security Measures

In parallel developments, the XRP Ledger has made notable progress in adopting quantum-resistant technologies. The network has introduced ML-DSA signatures on its alphanet as part of a research initiative supported by Google funding. This advancement builds upon the earlier integration of Dilithium cryptography, a post-quantum signature scheme designed to enhance transaction security.

Academic research has suggested that XRP Ledger is among the leading platforms in implementing advanced cryptographic solutions. The adoption of these technologies is expected to strengthen user trust and improve resilience against future threats.

Additionally, Brian Armstrong reportedly indicated in a March 2026 discussion that while quantum computing does not yet pose an immediate risk, early adoption of quantum-resistant measures places networks like XRP Ledger in a strategically advantageous position. He conveyed that proactive preparation today could yield significant long-term benefits as the technology landscape evolves.

A Proactive Approach to Blockchain Security

Overall, the research and ongoing developments across blockchain ecosystems reflect a growing emphasis on long-term security. While quantum threats remain speculative, early adoption of advanced cryptographic techniques is increasingly seen as a critical step in ensuring the sustainability and trustworthiness of decentralized networks.
