Algorand and Paycode Unite to Boost Offline Financial Access

The Algorand Foundation has entered into a strategic alliance with Paycode, a global provider of biometric and offline digital payment systems, in a move designed to expand financial inclusion across underserved and remote communities. This collaboration reflects a mutual commitment to leveraging blockchain technology to deliver scalable and secure financial services to regions often left outside the reach of traditional systems.

Paycode has established operations in several countries, including Afghanistan, Ghana, Zambia, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In many of these areas, large portions of the population remain disconnected from the formal banking system due to infrastructural and technological limitations. Through this partnership, both organizations plan to explore the integration of public blockchain frameworks to enhance digital identity systems, improve payment transparency, and support innovative models for secure and inclusive financial disbursements.

The Algorand Foundation highlighted that the collaboration is expected to bring blockchain capabilities to populations with the greatest need, emphasizing that Paycode already operates in some of the most challenging environments. By working together, the organizations intend to create systems that offer higher levels of transparency, trust, and operational efficiency.

As a major step in the partnership, Paycode has chosen Algorand as the blockchain platform on which to migrate its digital payment infrastructure. Currently, Paycode’s technology serves over 6 million individuals across eight countries, many of whom lack consistent internet access or proximity to financial institutions. The company has facilitated approximately $250 million in secure aid and social welfare payments using its biometric authentication tools, offline digital wallets, and real-time payment systems. This infrastructure has been instrumental in advancing financial inclusion in areas where conventional banking has little to no presence.

Under the new partnership, Algorand and Paycode will collaborate to migrate and enhance elements of Paycode’s payment infrastructure on-chain. The initiative includes plans to support transparent aid disbursement processes, integrate stablecoin-based settlements, and develop robust financial tools that function effectively in offline environments. Both entities emphasized the importance of designing systems that are not only scalable and interoperable but also reliable in regions with minimal connectivity.
