ANZ, Citi and BHP Test Tokenized Cross-Border Payments

ANZ has completed a cross-border U.S. dollar payment between Melbourne and New York in collaboration with Citi and mining company BHP, demonstrating how tokenized deposits and distributed ledger technology could support the future of international payments.

The transaction involved BHP using its existing ANZ bank account and established banking channel, while the tokenized deposit infrastructure and digital ledger technology operated in the background. The setup was designed to demonstrate that new digital payment infrastructure can be introduced without requiring corporate customers to significantly change the way they access banking services.

Shared Ledger Technology Targets Faster Global Payments

ANZ said the transaction provided evidence that shared ledger infrastructure could help advance cross-border payments toward faster and potentially continuous processing throughout the week. The approach is aimed at addressing some of the limitations of traditional international payment systems, particularly around processing windows, liquidity management and coordination between financial institutions.

A key element of the test was the use of Swift’s ledger as an interoperability layer connecting participating banks. The system demonstrated that tokenized deposits issued by separate financial institutions could interact through common infrastructure, potentially allowing banks to transfer digital representations of commercial bank money while maintaining established banking relationships.

The transaction demonstrated how tokenized deposits can move between banks through shared industry infrastructure while remaining invisible to corporate customers and potentially improving the efficiency of liquidity management.

For businesses such as BHP, this model could eventually allow cross-border payments to be processed through emerging digital infrastructure without requiring changes to existing account arrangements or payment channels. That could help reduce operational complexity as financial institutions adopt blockchain-based systems alongside conventional banking infrastructure.

Swift Ledger Focuses on Interoperability

Interoperability has emerged as a central issue in the development of blockchain-based financial infrastructure. Banks and payment providers increasingly need systems that can communicate across different digital networks rather than creating isolated tokenized deposit ecosystems.

The ANZ-Citi-BHP transaction provided a practical demonstration of how Swift’s ledger could connect different banking institutions and enable tokenized deposits to work across organizational boundaries. This is significant because the wider adoption of tokenized bank deposits will depend partly on their ability to move between institutions rather than remaining confined to individual bank platforms.

Swift has positioned its ledger infrastructure as a means of extending the capabilities of its existing global network while retaining established standards around security and resilience. The latest transaction suggests that blockchain-based payment infrastructure could operate alongside the systems already used by financial institutions.

Swift’s ledger is designed to provide a common connection between banks, allowing tokenized deposits from different institutions to interoperate while supporting faster, more transparent, and potentially always-on cross-border payments.

Potential Benefits for Banks and Corporates

The development could offer several potential benefits to financial institutions and corporate customers. Faster settlement may improve liquidity management by reducing the time funds remain in transit. Continuous processing could also provide businesses with greater flexibility when sending payments across international markets outside traditional banking hours.

For banks, interoperable tokenized deposits could reduce the need to build separate connections for every digital asset network or banking counterparty. A shared infrastructure layer could instead provide a standardized route for transactions between participating institutions.

For corporate users, the technology may eventually provide greater visibility into payment flows while keeping the underlying digital infrastructure largely out of sight. This could make blockchain-based payments more practical for companies that want faster settlement without having to directly manage digital assets or blockchain networks.

The initiative marks a step toward integrating tokenized deposits with established global payment infrastructure, potentially giving banks and enterprises greater flexibility, visibility and access to faster cross-border settlement.

The Melbourne-to-New York transaction therefore represents more than a technology demonstration. It illustrates how financial institutions could combine tokenization, shared ledger infrastructure and existing banking channels to build a cross-border payment environment capable of operating with greater speed, interoperability and availability.
