Consortium Role Could Shape Self-Custody Rules

Bitget Wallet

Bitget Wallet has joined Japan’s Blockchain Collaborative Consortium (BCCC), giving the self-custodial cryptocurrency wallet a direct role in discussions around the country’s evolving digital-asset regulations. The move comes as Japan continues to refine rules for blockchain-based financial services, including decentralized finance and platforms where users maintain direct control of their assets.

Bitget Wallet, which says it serves more than 100 million users globally, is expected to contribute operational experience from international markets to discussions with Japanese industry participants and policymakers. Its involvement could help inform standards for non-custodial financial services while addressing the technical differences between custodial platforms and self-custody products.

Bitget Wallet’s membership in the BCCC is intended to bring global operational experience into Japan’s regulatory discussions and help develop standards that protect users while preserving the functionality of self-custodial and DeFi services.

The wallet supports more than 130 blockchains and over 1 million tokenized assets, according to the company. Its broad blockchain coverage gives it experience across multiple networks and digital-asset applications, which could provide practical insight as Japanese authorities consider how regulations should apply to increasingly diverse blockchain products.

BCCC Brings Industry and Policymakers Together

The Blockchain Collaborative Consortium was established in 2016 as an industry forum focused on promoting blockchain development and cooperation in Japan. The organization represents more than 270 companies and other participants across the country’s blockchain ecosystem.

Its activities include specialized committees covering areas such as stablecoins, DeFi and financial services. The consortium also facilitates discussions involving industry participants and government authorities, including consideration of technical issues associated with blockchain-based financial products.

Bitget Wallet’s participation provides the company with an opportunity to contribute to those discussions as Japan develops its approach to digital assets. The focus is expected to include how regulators can establish appropriate safeguards without imposing requirements that fail to account for the underlying technology.

This distinction is particularly relevant for self-custodial wallets because users, rather than a centralized service provider, retain control of their private keys. That structure creates regulatory and consumer-protection questions that differ from those associated with traditional exchanges and custodial platforms.

Self-Custody Becomes a Key Regulatory Issue

The role of self-custody is becoming increasingly important as digital-asset markets expand. Regulators must consider how to protect consumers while recognizing that non-custodial services operate differently from businesses that directly hold customer assets.

Bitget Wallet has highlighted security and asset ownership as central elements of its approach. The company cites a $300 million protection fund and hardware-backed security measures as part of its security infrastructure.

Blockchain Collaborative Consortium (BCCC) is Japan's premier industry association focused on promoting and accelerating the adoption of blockchain technology.

The company is also expected to emphasize consumer education, particularly around private-key management. For self-custody users, protecting private keys is fundamental because losing control of the keys can result in losing access to digital assets.

The policy discussions could help determine how Japan regulates self-custodial wallets while maintaining user ownership and access to decentralized financial services.

Japan Seeks Balance Between Innovation and Protection

Japan has been developing its digital-asset framework as blockchain technology becomes increasingly connected to financial services. The country’s regulatory approach has sought to balance consumer protection, market stability, and technological development.

As per reports, Bitget Wallet Chief Operating Officer Alvin Kan said the company views Japan as a market where technological development and regulatory clarity are progressing at the same time. He indicated that the growing inclusion of self-custody in formal policy discussions made it important for regulators to understand how these products function in practice.

Kan also emphasized the company’s intention to contribute experience from international markets to help create standards that are practical for consumers and workable for businesses.

The BCCC membership could therefore give Bitget Wallet a greater role in Japan’s digital-asset policy debate while providing policymakers with additional industry expertise. As self-custodial wallets, DeFi applications and blockchain-based financial services continue to develop, the resulting regulatory framework could influence how Japanese consumers and businesses interact with global digital-asset markets.

The collaboration could ultimately support clearer rules for non-custodial services while allowing Japanese users and developers to benefit from blockchain innovation without compromising consumer safeguards.
