The Celo Foundation has announced that Chainlink CCIP (Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol) is now operational on the Celo network. Celo, an emerging Ethereum Layer-2 and mobile-first blockchain, is designed for rapid, low-cost payments on a global scale. This integration aims to provide the Celo ecosystem with advanced levels of cross-chain security and reliability, alongside various cross-chain token transfer mechanisms. These mechanisms include burn/mint, lock/unlock, and lock/mint processes, which support a diverse array of use cases and applications.
The foundation emphasized that as more real-world assets (RWAs) are tokenized and liquidity moves across chains, secure interoperability enabled by CCIP will position Celo and its ecosystem at the forefront of on-chain innovation. Following community approval, Celo had previously joined the Chainlink SCALE program, which provided them with expert technical support and enhanced access to Chainlink services.

Chainlink’s CCIP offers robust cross-chain infrastructure, having facilitated over $10.5 trillion in transaction value while maintaining the highest security standards. CCIP achieves the fifth and highest level of cross-chain security. A crucial element of CCIP’s security is the Risk Management Network, an independent network that continually monitors and verifies cross-chain operations to detect and prevent erroneous activities. This multi-layered security approach is vital for supporting a secure, interoperable ecosystem, especially given that over $2.8 billion has historically been lost due to insecure and unreliable cross-chain infrastructure.
The integration of Chainlink CCIP with the Celo network is seen as a significant milestone. Similarly, Eric Nakagawa, Executive Director at the Celo Foundation, noted that canonical cross-chain infrastructure could significantly drive the long-term growth and adoption of the Celo ecosystem. He pointed out that CCIP, being the only interoperability solution achieving level 5 cross-chain security, offers an excellent option for developers, founders, and the wider community.
