Chainlink Brings U.S. Economic Data to Public Blockchains

BEA data feeds expand blockchain access to official economic figures

The U.S. Department of Commerce is moving official economic data onto public blockchain networks through Chainlink, allowing decentralized applications to access selected figures published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).

The initiative covers 10 blockchain networks and is designed to make government economic data available onchain as new figures are released through the BEA’s regular publication schedule. The development could give blockchain developers direct access to standardized data on economic growth, inflation and private domestic spending without requiring them to manually transfer information from government releases.

The rollout provides blockchain applications with six data feeds covering real gross domestic product, the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index and Real Final Sales to Private Domestic Purchasers.

Chainlink said the feeds are structured around two versions for each economic indicator. One provides the latest reported level, while the other records the relevant change over time using an annualized calculation.

GDP and inflation data enter blockchain infrastructure

The real GDP feeds are designed to show changes in the size of the U.S. economy after accounting for price movements. One feed provides the current level of real GDP, while another measures the change from the preceding quarter on an annualized basis.

The PCE Price Index feeds provide similar information for inflation. One tracks the current index level, using 2017 as the base year, while the second measures the quarter-over-quarter change at an annualized rate.

PCE data is particularly important to financial markets because it is the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge when assessing price pressures and its long-term 2% inflation objective.

The third indicator, Real Final Sales to Private Domestic Purchasers, provides insight into spending by private businesses and consumers. Taken together, the three measures give blockchain applications access to data spanning economic output, consumer prices and private-sector spending.

Ten blockchain networks initially supported

The feeds are initially available across Ethereum, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, Botanix, Linea, Mantle, Optimism, Sonic and ZKsync. Chainlink indicated that additional networks could be supported depending on demand from users and developers.

The timing of data updates will correspond with the BEA’s existing release schedule. Depending on the indicator, figures may be updated monthly or quarterly, meaning blockchain applications can receive new government data when the underlying economic figures are officially published.

Chainlink’s oracle infrastructure serves as the connection between external information and blockchain-based applications. Oracles allow smart contracts and decentralized applications to receive data that does not originate directly from a blockchain.

The new infrastructure could enable developers to automatically incorporate fresh GDP, inflation and spending data into prediction markets, trading systems, inflation-linked assets and other blockchain-based financial products.

This approach could reduce the need for developers to manually collect economic releases and convert them into blockchain-compatible data. Automated delivery may also improve the speed at which applications respond to newly released economic information.

Commerce expands earlier blockchain data initiative

The Commerce Department’s latest effort builds on an initiative first announced in August 2025. At that time, the department worked with Chainlink and Pyth Network to make selected BEA economic data available on blockchain networks.

The broader government initiative has also involved other blockchain platforms. A separate effort placed second-quarter 2025 GDP data on networks including Bitcoin and Solana, although Chainlink was not involved in that portion of the program.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the initiative was intended to make U.S. economic information more permanent and accessible globally while strengthening the country’s position in blockchain technology.

Chainlink’s involvement in financial data infrastructure extends beyond government statistics. The company also provides data infrastructure for Coinbase Tokenized Stocks on Base, where price feeds support tokenized equities used in decentralized finance applications such as lending and borrowing.

Chainlink said its data feed infrastructure holds ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 1 certifications. The latest deployment therefore adds official U.S. economic statistics to the range of external information that can be delivered through its oracle infrastructure to public blockchain networks.
