Circle Internet Group’s shares rose 2.8% during Monday’s premarket trading after the company announced that it had acquired assets from IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio. IBM shares also moved higher, gaining 1.6% following the announcement. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
The acquisition includes a portfolio of more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 granted patents across multiple jurisdictions. These patents cover a broad range of blockchain applications, including banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations.
The acquisition significantly expands Circle’s intellectual property portfolio, strengthening its ability to build infrastructure for internet-native finance while reinforcing its enterprise blockchain capabilities.
According to Circle, the newly acquired intellectual property aligns with its long-term strategy of developing the internet financial system. The portfolio is expected to support the company’s core products and services, including the USDC stablecoin, Circle Payments Network, Arc, and a growing suite of on-chain financial products and enterprise tools. The companies also indicated that they intended to explore additional commercial opportunities following the transaction.
Sarah Wilson, Circle’s general counsel and corporate secretary, stated that IBM had long been recognized as a leader in technological innovation and explained that the acquisition would enhance Circle’s capacity to advance the infrastructure supporting global internet-based finance.
IBM’s Extensive Blockchain Patent Legacy
IBM established one of the world’s largest blockchain intellectual property portfolios during the industry’s rapid expansion. Between 2018 and 2019, the technology company filed more than 500 blockchain-related patent applications, covering innovations ranging from consensus mechanisms to enterprise supply chain management and distributed ledger technologies.
With the completion of the transaction, ownership of that extensive patent portfolio has shifted to Circle, providing the stablecoin issuer with a substantial collection of intellectual property that could support future product development while strengthening its competitive position in enterprise blockchain markets.
Circle had already demonstrated an increasing focus on blockchain innovation before the acquisition. In December 2023, the company secured a patent for parallel block processing technology, which was designed to improve blockchain transaction throughput by enabling multiple blocks to be processed simultaneously rather than sequentially.
The addition of IBM’s patents is expected to complement Circle’s existing blockchain technologies, potentially accelerating innovation across payment networks, digital assets, enterprise infrastructure, and financial services.

Patent Protection and Broader Innovation Strategy
The acquisition also reflects Circle’s broader efforts to safeguard its technology against intellectual property disputes. The company joined the LOT Network, a defensive patent alliance, in both 2023 and 2025. IBM is also a member of the organization, which has expanded to include more than 2,800 participating companies and approximately 3.8 million patents.
The LOT Network operates by providing automatic patent licenses to member companies if any participating member’s patents are later acquired by patent assertion entities, commonly referred to as patent trolls. This structure is intended to reduce litigation risks while encouraging continued technological innovation among participating organizations.
IBM has also pursued additional blockchain-related intellectual property initiatives in recent years. In early 2021, the company collaborated with IPwe on a project exploring the tokenization of corporate patents as non-fungible tokens on blockchain networks. That initiative examined ways to transform intellectual property into digital assets that could be more efficiently managed and transferred through blockchain technology.
Beyond expanding Circle‘s patent holdings, the transaction positions the company to strengthen its digital asset ecosystem while supporting future enterprise blockchain development and broader adoption of internet-based financial infrastructure.
