Roughrider Coin becomes first stablecoin on Fiserv infrastructure

Fiserv has launched a digital asset platform for financial institutions, with Bank of North Dakota’s dollar-backed Roughrider Coin becoming the first stablecoin to go live on the new infrastructure.

The platform is designed to help banks and other financial institutions use stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and digital assets within established banking and payment systems, while maintaining existing operational and regulatory frameworks.

Roughrider Coin is intended to facilitate faster transfers between banks participating in North Dakota’s interbank network. VersaBank is issuing the stablecoin, while Fireblocks is providing tokenization and digital asset infrastructure. Transactions are processed on the Solana blockchain.

Bank of North Dakota is using Fiserv’s platform for Roughrider Coin issuance, reserve management, custody, and settlement. The bank plans to expand the stablecoin across banking and payment processes as participating institutions adopt the system.

More than 90 banks and credit unions in the network will be able to access Roughrider Coin through Commercial Center, Fiserv’s commercial online banking platform. The institutions already use the platform for conventional interbank transfers, potentially allowing the digital asset functionality to be incorporated into existing workflows rather than requiring an entirely separate banking interface.

Stablecoin designed for interbank transfers

Roughrider Coin is backed by the US dollar and is being positioned as a digital mechanism for moving funds between participating financial institutions. The initiative is intended to improve the efficiency of interbank settlement while establishing infrastructure that could support additional digital money applications.

VersaBank will provide custody services for the stablecoin. Its responsibilities include minting and burning tokens, safeguarding assets and managing reserves associated with Roughrider Coin.

The arrangement gives Fiserv a live banking application for its digital asset platform while providing Bank of North Dakota and its partner institutions with a blockchain-based mechanism for interbank transfers.

Fiserv targets broader digital asset applications

Fiserv said its platform is intended for financial institutions, corporations, marketplaces and financial technology companies developing stablecoin and other digital asset applications.

Potential applications include stablecoin-backed card programs, cross-border payments, programmable commerce and automated treasury operations. The infrastructure also supports tokenized deposits and global currency account services, including US dollar accounts for financial institutions operating internationally.

Fiserv’s platform is intended to move digital asset applications beyond isolated experiments by integrating stablecoins and tokenized money into established banking, payments, and treasury processes.

The launch reflects a growing effort among financial technology providers to connect blockchain infrastructure with conventional financial services. For institutions, such systems can potentially reduce the need to build separate digital asset infrastructure while allowing them to retain existing processes for account access, custody, settlement and compliance.

Fiserv’s head of embedded finance and digital assets, Sunil Sachdev, said the deployment represented a transition from digital asset concepts toward production applications involving financial institutions. The company expects the infrastructure to help clients pursue greater efficiency in banking and payments while maintaining the security, trust, and regulatory requirements associated with financial services.

North Dakota expands digital banking initiative

Bank of North Dakota CEO Don Morgan said the Roughrider Coin project builds on the institution’s role in supporting agriculture, commerce and industry throughout the state. He said the stablecoin would provide community banks and credit unions with another mechanism for transferring money through the state’s interbank network.

Morgan also described the project as part of the bank’s broader effort to support innovation while maintaining the resilience of North Dakota’s financial sector.

VersaBank founder and president David Taylor said the bank was working with Fiserv to develop and operate the first product on the new digital asset platform. The partnership combines Fiserv’s financial technology infrastructure with VersaBank’s regulated digital asset capabilities, according to Taylor.

With Roughrider Coin now live, Fiserv has established a production banking use case that combines stablecoin issuance, custody and settlement with an existing network of more than 90 banks and credit unions.

The deployment could provide a foundation for additional digital asset services as financial institutions explore blockchain-based payments, tokenized deposits and automated treasury functions. The immediate application remains focused on interbank transfers in North Dakota, making the project a practical test of how stablecoins can operate within established financial infrastructure.
