Hana Bank Issues $100 Million Digital Bond With T+0 Settlement

Hana Bank has completed a $100 million five-year foreign-currency digital bond using Euroclear’s distributed ledger technology infrastructure, achieving same-day T+0 settlement in what the bank described as a first for South Korea’s foreign-currency bond market.

The transaction was completed on Sept. 18 through D-FMI, a distributed ledger technology platform operated by Euroclear. The bond’s issuance, registration, allocation and settlement were processed through the digital infrastructure, reducing the settlement period from the several business days typically associated with conventional foreign-currency bonds.

Digital Infrastructure Cuts Settlement Time

The transaction demonstrates how distributed ledger technology can be applied to established capital-market instruments without requiring institutions to abandon existing market structures.

Hana Bank’s $100 million digital bond completed issuance and settlement on the same day, cutting the conventional three-to-five-business-day settlement period to T+0 through Euroclear’s D-FMI platform.

Standard Chartered acted as the sole lead manager and handled the transaction from structuring through issuance and distribution. The arrangement allowed Hana Bank to use blockchain-based infrastructure while retaining documentation and connectivity compatible with conventional capital-market operations.

Euroclear’s D-FMI platform handled the securities lifecycle on a distributed ledger. Bond allocation and payment settlement were completed on the issuance date, while the digital bond was connected to Euroclear’s existing global settlement network.

This structure also means institutional investors can access and trade the bond through their existing Euroclear accounts and trading systems rather than having to develop separate infrastructure specifically for the digital security.

Existing Bond Framework Supports Digital Issuance

Hana Bank used documentation from its existing Global Medium-Term Note program for the transaction. Maintaining the established documentation framework allowed the digital bond to remain compatible with existing capital-market processes while introducing distributed ledger technology into issuance and settlement.

The development is significant because digital securities often require new technical and legal arrangements before they can be integrated into established financial markets. Hana Bank’s approach instead combines a digital settlement infrastructure with familiar bond documentation and institutional market access.

The bank has linked the initiative to broader efforts to diversify funding channels and introduce blockchain technology into capital markets. The immediate operational change, however, is the reduction in settlement time and the ability to complete several stages of the bond transaction through a distributed ledger.

South Korea Prepares for Tokenized Securities

The transaction comes as South Korea prepares to introduce a formal legal framework for tokenized securities. The Financial Services Commission said in September that amendments to the Electronic Registration Act are scheduled to take effect on Feb. 4, 2027, providing a legal basis for recognizing tokenized securities as a form of digitally recorded securities.

The regulator’s roadmap calls for tokenization to initially cover selected institutional private-market funds and bonds, certain unlisted stocks and publicly offered fractional investment securities. A later phase could expand tokenization to additional publicly offered securities, while a third phase envisions on-chain payment infrastructure connected with assets such as stablecoins.

The regulatory timetable gives Hana Bank’s transaction broader relevance because the bank has demonstrated a live digital bond settlement process before the new framework takes effect.

Euroclear Connectivity Targets Institutional Adoption

Hana Bank’s use of Euroclear infrastructure also addresses a key challenge for institutional adoption: connecting digital securities with existing financial-market networks.

By linking the digital bond to Euroclear’s established settlement network, the transaction allows institutional investors to use existing accounts and trading infrastructure rather than creating separate systems for the tokenized instrument.

The model could reduce operational friction for institutions exploring digital securities, although broader adoption will depend on regulatory developments, market liquidity, interoperability, and the number of financial institutions willing to use distributed ledger settlement for regular transactions.

The transaction also illustrates a distinction between tokenizing a financial asset and creating an entirely separate financial market infrastructure. In this case, the bond remains part of an established capital-market framework while distributed ledger technology changes how issuance, registration, and settlement are processed.

South Korea’s upcoming regulatory changes could provide further opportunities for banks and financial institutions to expand such applications. The Financial Services Commission has already established a public-private working structure covering technology, infrastructure, issuance, distribution and settlement as authorities prepare for the 2027 implementation.

For Hana Bank, the $100 million transaction provides a practical demonstration of faster digital bond settlement. For the broader market, its significance will depend on whether similar transactions can move from individual pilots to recurring issuance and secondary-market activity.

The transaction combines existing institutional bond-market infrastructure with distributed ledger settlement, providing a model for faster processing without requiring investors to replace their established market access systems.
